Before installing a third-party package on a Synology NAS, verify who developed it, obtain it through a channel the developer documents, confirm compatibility with your exact DSM version and NAS model, and review its access needs, privacy terms, and update history. A Package Center trust setting is only an installation gate—not a guarantee that a package is safe. If a material question about its source, data use, or maintenance remains unanswered, defer installation rather than loosening DSM’s trust controls.
What DSM’s publisher trust setting does—and does not—tell you
DSM controls which packages can be installed through Package Center trust-level settings. Synology’s DSM 6 documentation lists three choices: Synology Inc. only; Synology Inc. and trusted publishers; and Any publisher. Synology defines the last choice as allowing installation “regardless of publisher and integrity.” See Synology’s DSM 6 Package Center configuration help. The setting permits or blocks installation; choosing a permissive level does not establish that a particular package is trustworthy.
A trusted-publisher status can reflect a community source being added or a publisher certificate being imported. Treat it as one signal about publisher identity, not proof that the package behaves harmlessly, handles information appropriately, or receives ongoing security updates. Synology says it cannot completely verify third-party package claims or practices, and advises users to review the package’s EULA, privacy notice, and terms in its Third-Party Packages disclosure.
Prefer the narrowest trust setting that allows the package you intend to install. If a temporary exception is necessary, return to the restrictive setting afterward if your DSM version’s interface permits it. Menu labels and available controls can differ by DSM version.

Identify the package and establish where it came from
Write down the package’s name and version, the claimed developer, its purpose, the DSM versions and NAS models it supports, and the URL from which you plan to obtain it. Start with the developer’s own website or official documentation. Synology’s Package Center installation help explains that a third-party repository URL may need to be obtained from the developer’s website; another route is to upload a downloaded .spk package manually.
Follow the developer’s documented link to a repository or download host rather than trusting a URL copied from a forum, social-media post, or an unrelated mirror. A package name or icon that resembles a known project is not enough to establish who published the file. If you cannot connect the package and its download source to a verifiable developer, do not install it.

Review what the package does and what it requires
Read the package description alongside its privacy statement, EULA, and terms of use or service. Look for disclosures about information collected from you or the NAS, telemetry, remote access, required accounts, and payment. Synology warns that third-party packages may collect information about the user or device. Its Package Center Terms and Conditions also state that the license relationship for a third-party package is between the user and its developer, not Synology.
Compare the access the package says it needs with its stated function. Ask whether its explanation makes clear what information it handles and why its required access is proportionate to the job it performs. If the developer leaves a material question about data collection or access unanswered, defer installation or ask the developer; do not assume the package is safe simply because it appears in a repository or DSM allows it to install.

Confirm compatibility and evidence of active maintenance
Use current developer documentation to confirm support for your exact NAS model and DSM version. Synology’s installation help says Package Center lists packages compatible with the user’s storage system, but that should not be treated as a compatibility guarantee for a package installed manually. Package availability and compatibility can also vary by country and change over time.
Check the developer’s release history, how recently it updated the package, whether it responds to security issues, and where it announces fixes. A package’s continued availability does not establish that it is maintained. For business-critical or security-sensitive uses, weigh an unclear or stale maintenance record more heavily than you might for a low-impact experiment.

Validate a manually downloaded package when the developer supports it
If the developer provides documented signature-verification instructions, follow them. If it publishes a cryptographic hash through an authenticated developer channel, compare that value with a hash you calculate for the downloaded file. A checksum obtained only from the same untrusted mirror as the package is not independent evidence that the file is authentic.
These checks help assess authenticity and file integrity, but they do not prove that the package’s behavior or privacy practices are acceptable. The Enduring Security Framework and CISA’s general software supply-chain guidance recommends documented signature validation and checks of authenticity, integrity, and trust chains. Synology does not promise one universal verification workflow or a signature or published checksum for every third-party .spk. If the developer supplies no trustworthy validation material, record that as unresolved risk rather than treating the package as verified.

Decide whether to install, defer, or reject
- Install when you can establish the developer and distribution source, confirm support for your NAS and DSM combination, understand the package’s purpose and data practices, find maintenance appropriate to your use, and successfully complete any available trustworthy integrity checks.
- Defer when a material question about source authenticity, compatibility, data collection, access, or maintenance remains open. Seek an answer from the developer or wait for adequate documentation instead of changing the trust level as a shortcut.
- Reject a package from an unverified mirror, one whose developer cannot be identified, one that requests unexplained access, or one whose licensing or privacy terms conflict with your needs. An unmaintained package is especially unsuitable when your use case is security-sensitive.
When comparing candidates, assess the same factors for each: developer identity and distribution provenance; model and DSM compatibility; signature or other integrity evidence; privacy and access requirements; maintenance and security-update history; and license and support terms. The cited sources do not establish a numerical scoring system, so use explicit criteria rather than an invented risk score.
Plan for updates and removal before you install
Find out how the developer distributes updates and how to uninstall the package. Also identify how to remove a repository or certificate trust you added if it is no longer needed. DSM 7’s Package Center configuration help describes update notifications and automatic-update controls. Synology defines “important” updates as versions that fix critical bugs or security vulnerabilities. Its help also says beta versions are not recommended for commercial use.
After installation, monitor developer announcements and DSM updates. If the package loses support, its source disappears, or it begins behaving differently or requests access you did not expect, stop using it while you assess the impact and determine the removal path. As a prudent general administration step, make a backup before a consequential package change; this is not a package-specific backup procedure prescribed by the cited Synology instructions.
