Researchers most often measure superconductivity in a thin film by recording electrical resistance as the sample is cooled. They report how they define the transition temperature (Tc)—for example, by its onset, midpoint, or the point of zero resistance—and specify the current, magnetic field, and strain conditions. Diffraction and thickness measurements help establish what film was tested and how its structure relates to the result.
How a resistance measurement reveals a superconducting transition
In a transport measurement, electrical contacts pass current through a film while instruments measure the voltage. From those readings researchers calculate resistance or resistivity as temperature changes. A transition appears as a change in the resistance curve; the reported Tc depends on which point on that curve the study defines as the transition.
Common definitions include the onset of the resistance drop, a midpoint between onset and zero resistance, and zero resistance. These are not interchangeable. When comparing results, check the stated criterion rather than assuming every paper uses the same one.
For example, a study of FeSe films measured electrical resistivity and Hall resistivity from 2 to 300 K under magnetic fields up to 9 T, then examined how the curves varied with strain. Those are the conditions in that particular study, not a standard temperature or field range for all thin-film measurements. Nabeshima et al., 2018

Why a thin film can have resistance below its transition
A nonzero resistance does not, by itself, prove that a thin film lacks a superconducting state. In films, especially under an applied magnetic field, vortex motion or phase slips can produce finite resistance. The measured curve reflects the sample at a particular temperature, current, field, and other conditions; its interpretation needs that context.
Vortex crossings, phase slips, and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition are among the phenomena discussed in the review Resistance in Superconductors. This is one reason researchers state their transition criterion and measurement conditions rather than treating a single resistance value as a complete description.

How researchers impose and characterize strain
For an epitaxial film, the substrate can influence the film’s in-plane lattice strain. Researchers characterize the resulting film structure—often with X-ray diffraction—and measure thickness separately. A substrate choice is a way to tune strain, but a difference between films on different substrates does not automatically show that strain alone caused every change: interface effects, composition, and microstructure may also vary.
In the 2018 FeSe study, researchers grew films on LaAlO3 and LSAT-based substrates, used X-ray diffraction to assess structure and orientation, and measured thickness with a stylus profiler. Their strain parameter was defined relative to bulk FeSe lattice length; the studied samples covered about −1.5% to +1.5%. These figures describe those FeSe samples, not a general strain range for superconductors.

The authors reported a Tc increase under compression, reaching up to 12 K in their summary. For films with strain greater than 0.5% in tension, they reported no zero resistivity above 2 K. These findings are specific to the samples and measurement criteria in that work; they should not be generalized to other materials. The authors also discussed covariation among carrier density, structural-transition behavior, and strain. Nabeshima et al., 2018
What critical-current measurements add
Researchers can measure current–voltage behavior to determine a critical current or critical-current density. The reported value depends on the criterion used to identify it, such as a specified voltage, electric-field, or resistivity threshold. The IEC 61788-17:2021 catalog excerpt describes transport critical-current density in terms of voltage or resistivity measurement and gives examples of commonly used criteria. Consult the full official standard for normative requirements. IEC 61788-17:2021 catalog excerpt

A critical-current value is meaningful in comparison only when the relevant conditions are aligned:
- The electric-field or resistivity criterion used to define the current.
- Temperature and magnetic-field magnitude and orientation.
- Current direction and contact geometry.
- Film composition, thickness, and strain state.
High-current transport also makes temperature stability important because current flowing through a resistive fixture can generate heat. A 2013 NIST report on variable-temperature critical-current systems described reducing temperature errors to no more than 0.05 K in the systems reviewed; that is a reported performance figure for those systems, not a universal guarantee. The report discusses systems covering critical currents from less than 0.1 A to about 1 kA, a range reviewed in that work rather than a universal range for thin-film experiments. NIST, 2013

How researchers measure critical fields
Critical-field measurements locate the field conditions at which superconducting behavior changes, but the result depends on how the field boundary is defined and measured. Measurement and extrapolation methods, sample mounting, strain, and nonuniformity can all affect interpretation. Fickett’s National Bureau of Standards review notes that mounting should limit strain and sample motion while maintaining thermal contact. In a composite or nonuniform sample, a single measured field may conceal spatial variation in composition or microstructure. Fickett, 1985
A practical checklist for comparing studies
Before treating two reported values as comparable, check the details that define what was measured:
- Material composition, film thickness, substrate, and measured strain state.
- Whether Tc means onset, midpoint, or zero resistance.
- Current, contact geometry, magnetic-field magnitude, and field orientation.
- For critical current, the electric-field or resistivity criterion.
- Temperature stability and the method used to define or extrapolate a critical field.
- Whether the reported quantity is Tc, critical current density, or critical field.
These details matter because a change in measurement conditions or criterion can change the reported number even when the underlying material is similar.
What transport measurements do not establish on their own
A resistance curve is a direct transport measurement, but it does not by itself quantify magnetic screening or the superconducting volume fraction in an ultrathin strained film. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed protocol for those measurements in that specific setting, so a resistance-based result should not be presented as if it measured those quantities.
Likewise, contact materials are part of making electrical connections, not detectors of superconductivity. The FeSe study used silver paste for contacts but did not establish a particular commercial product’s performance over cryogenic cycles. Nabeshima et al., 2018
