Choose by fit, not by the label “small” or a single cargo-volume figure. Shortlist cars using published dimensions, then test the exact vehicle with the front seats set for their usual drivers, the people who will ride in back, and the items you regularly carry. A hatchback’s large rear opening can help with bulky cargo; a sedan’s separate trunk can better hide belongings.
What counts as a small car?
There is no single size that defines every small car. Consumer Reports groups both subcompact and compact cars in its small-car category and notes that choices have narrowed as automakers shift toward SUVs. Recent compact cars may offer more rear-seat room than older small-car stereotypes suggest, so evaluate the specific model and year rather than assuming it will be cramped. Start with the passengers who will actually ride
Write down who usually rides in the car and where they sit. Include the tallest regular passenger and any child seat that needs to be installed. Set the front seat for the usual driver before assessing the rear seat; a published legroom figure does not tell you whether a particular passenger will be comfortable in that seating position.
- Check rear legroom, headroom, shoulder space, and whether passengers can place their feet comfortably.
- Try getting into and out of the rear seat, not just sitting in it.
- Install the actual child seat, if relevant, and check how it affects the front-seat position and access to other seats.
- Repeat the check for every candidate, using the same front-seat setting where possible.
Specifications can narrow the list, but an in-person check with the regular passengers is the practical way to judge fit.

Test cargo with your real items
List the largest things you routinely carry—such as a stroller, suitcase, grocery bags, sports equipment, or folded mobility aid—and bring them to the test drive or measure them beforehand. Cargo volume alone does not tell you whether an item can pass through the opening or fit in the space’s particular shape.
- Check the opening’s width and height, the loading lip, and the floor’s usable length and width.
- Look for space taken up by the wheel wells or a sloping roofline.
- Load items with the rear seats in the position you normally use, then check that the hatch or trunk closes.
- If you need to fold seats, check the split-fold arrangement and whether the resulting space works for your items.
- Consider loading height and whether the cargo blocks the driver’s view.
Consumer Reports describes a largest-fitting-box method for assessing usable cargo space in SUVs, minivans, and wagons. Choose between a sedan trunk and a hatchback opening
A sedan has a separate trunk; a hatchback has a rear liftgate opening into a continuous cargo area. That difference affects how easily you can load bulky shapes, how visible belongings are, and potentially how much cargo noise reaches the cabin. Which layout works better depends on what you carry and what you value.

Edmunds’ May 15, 2024 comparison gives a model-specific Honda Civic example: 24.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats for the cited hatchback and 14.8 cubic feet for the sedan. These figures illustrate that particular comparison, not a universal difference between body styles or years. Use specifications to shortlist, not to decide
Compare the same model year and, where possible, the same trim. Look at rear legroom and headroom, passenger volume, and cargo capacity both with the seats in use and folded. Ask how cargo figures are measured: manufacturers’ numbers may not describe the same usable shape or access, and a maximum figure with seats folded may be irrelevant if passengers regularly use those seats.
For a dated example, Edmunds’ 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback specification page lists 29.9 inches of rear legroom and 17.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity with all seats in place. Those are published specifications for that model year, not a comfort guarantee or a comparison result; confirm the current figures and applicable trim with the automaker. Run a consistent test-drive check
- Set the driver’s seat for the person who will usually drive.
- Have the regular passengers sit in their usual positions; check comfort, foot placement, and entry and exit.
- Install any child seat and confirm that the other seats remain usable.
- Load your recurring cargo items, or test against their measurements, with the rear seats in their normal position.
- Check whether items clear the opening, sit securely, and allow the hatch or trunk to close.
- Try the folded-seat configuration if you need it, then check visibility with the load in place.
- Compare candidates on passenger fit, loading access, usable space with seats up, flexibility with seats folded, privacy and noise preferences, and exact year-and-trim specifications.
