Before signing up for a browser-based virtual pet game, check what information it requires and how its privacy, chat, and account-security controls work. Then use a strong, unique password, enable multifactor authentication if offered, keep identifying details out of your profile, and treat unexpected chat links as suspicious. The exact data collected and safeguards available depend on the game.
Before you create an account, check what the game asks for
Find the privacy notice and terms through the game’s official website. Look for what information is required versus optional, why the service uses it, whether it is shared, and how to contact support. Also check whether you can control profile visibility, friend requests, chat, and sharing. These settings may appear during registration, and their availability varies by service. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s gaming privacy guidance explains why it is worth reviewing the notice and settings before playing.
Ask whether the game needs each detail it requests. Do not volunteer extra identifying information in a username, profile, or chat when it is not necessary to play. If the policy is unclear about a required field or data sharing, check the service’s support information before proceeding.
Use account details that are hard to misuse or connect to you
Choose a strong password and protect recovery access
Use a strong password that you do not reuse on other services. Turn on multifactor authentication if the game supports it. Keep the email account used for recovery accessible and protected, and learn what recovery and security-notification options the game actually offers before you need them. A service may not provide every recovery feature.

Keep your public identity separate from your real one
A pseudonym can reduce what other players learn from your profile, but avoid handles that reveal your real name, age, school, workplace, or location. Reusing the same distinctive nickname across games and other sites can make it easier to connect those accounts. Keep your profile sparse, and consider what your visible friends list or public activity might reveal about you or other players.
Be cautious with chat links, offers, and login prompts
Do not share your password in chat or enter it on a page opened from an unexpected message. The Canadian privacy regulator warns that links in in-game chats, particularly from people you do not know in real life, may be phishing attempts. Be wary of unsolicited rewards, trades, or messages that ask you to sign in. If an offer might be genuine, go to the game’s official site or contact its support through a known channel rather than following an unfamiliar chat link. Keep chat, friend, and profile settings as restrictive as you find practical.
For children, review the game’s rules and controls together
Check the game’s age rules, parental notice and consent process, and available parent controls. Talk with the child about what can appear on their profile, who can contact them, and what to do if someone asks for personal information or sends a link. Use the controls the particular game provides; protections differ between services.

For example, Innersloth describes verified parental consent, randomized child usernames by default, and quick-chat restrictions for child users. Those are features described by that company, not safeguards to expect from every game. Its notice references COPPA; the Canadian regulator’s guidance discusses child consent in the Canadian context. A game or platform may process account and activity information beyond what appears on a pet’s profile. Roblox’s privacy policy, for example, describes login information and says creators can access some information such as a username, display name, user ID, game metrics, transaction details, and regional location information. Hasbro’s privacy notice says registration for online games may collect credentials to save gameplay activity. That statement does not establish what any particular virtual pet game collects. Hasbro Privacy. Read the current policy for the specific service you use, since examples from other companies cannot tell you what an unnamed game does.
