For a more natural-looking selfie, move the phone farther from your face, then adjust the framing; try soft window light or open shade; and compare a few camera heights. Close camera placement can make features nearer the lens look larger relative to the rest of the face. There is no single best angle or setup for everyone, so change one thing at a time and choose the result you prefer.
Start with camera distance
Perspective changes with the camera’s position. When a phone is very close to your face, features nearer the lens can appear larger than features farther away. That can make a selfie look unlike how you expect your face to appear in person; it does not mean your face looks that way from ordinary viewing distances.
A 2024 study in The Laryngoscope photographed 12 subjects at six distances using smartphones and full-frame cameras. Relative to its 60-inch full-frame comparison reference, the study reported 18% increased vertical midface stretching in smartphone photos made at 8 inches and 12% at 12 inches. Selected full-frame captures at 8 inches showed a 12%–19% increase. These are measurements from that study’s subjects and setup, not a prediction for every face, phone, or selfie. A separate Rutgers University report from 2018 described a Rutgers-Stanford mathematical model: compared with a photo taken at 5 feet, a selfie taken about 12 inches from the face made the nasal base appear approximately 30% wider and the nasal tip 7% wider in the model. This is a modeled comparison, not the same experiment as the 2024 study’s midface measurements. Read Rutgers’ explanation.

Move back, then reframe
- Increase the distance. Hold the phone farther away, rest it on a support, or use a smartphone selfie stick if you have one. There is no universally ideal distance; start by moving back enough that the phone is no longer close to your face.
- Restore the composition. If your phone offers an optical telephoto camera, try it from the farther position. Otherwise, crop the image afterward. A longer lens or zoom helps frame the shot; it is the changed camera position that changes perspective.
- Compare the result. Keep the lighting and camera height similar while comparing a closer frame with one taken farther away. This makes it easier to notice what distance changes.
Phone camera systems differ, so a particular zoom number or focal length is not a universal prescription. A CUNY photography course recommends stepping back and zooming in for cameraphone portraits, while Ricoh’s portrait guide likewise discusses shooting from farther away with a longer focal length. Choose light that is easy to work with
Soft, even light is a practical place to begin. Face a window, or outdoors, try open shade. Harsh overhead sun can cast deep shadows beneath the eyes, nose, and chin; moving into shade or turning your face toward the light may soften them. Golden-hour light is another option to experiment with, not a guaranteed improvement.

- Take a frame facing a window or standing in open shade.
- Turn slightly or move a step and take another frame, keeping the camera distance reasonably consistent.
- Compare the shadows and overall exposure, then use the light that suits the look you want.
Adobe’s phone-portrait guidance suggests window light, open shade, and reflected light as accessible options. It does not establish one lighting setup as universally most flattering, and you do not need a ring light, flash, or special color-temperature setting to try these approaches. Test camera height, framing, and pose
Camera height affects how proportions read, and a wide-angle view can be more noticeable when a face is near the edge of the frame. Try a few heights rather than assuming a high camera is always better. Adobe suggests experimenting with a position just above eye level; Ricoh’s examples illustrate how low and high camera positions can change apparent head and body proportions.

Make a fair comparison
- Take one photo at eye level, then try one slightly above or below.
- Keep distance and light as similar as practical so you are comparing camera height rather than several changes at once.
- Notice whether your face is centered or close to the edge of a wide-angle frame; adjust the composition if the edges look stretched.
- Choose the angle that fits your preference and intended style. There is no established universal best selfie angle.
For an optional pose to test, Adobe suggests relaxing, turning the body slightly while facing the camera, and gently moving the chin forward and down. Treat these as experiments, not rules: expression, facial structure, and personal taste vary. Adobe’s guide includes additional portrait suggestions.

You can try the main changes with your existing phone and available daylight. A selfie stick can help put the phone farther from your face; a phone tripod is useful if you want to set a timer and take a hands-free shot. Neither is necessary. If you edit afterward, keep adjustments modest: Adobe suggests small changes to exposure, contrast, warmth, or sharpness to maintain a natural-looking result.

When comparing photos, change one factor at a time: distance, framing method, light quality, or camera height. That helps you identify what you actually prefer without mistaking a change in lighting or pose for a change caused by distance.
