Choose a SynoCommunity package when it supports your exact NAS and DSM version and you want installation and updates managed through Package Center. Choose a container when the app’s publisher provides a compatible image, Container Manager is available on your NAS, and you are comfortable configuring storage, ports, permissions, and image updates. Neither format is automatically safer, faster, or better maintained; those qualities depend on the specific app and its maintainers.
First, what “Docker” means on current Synology systems
Synology calls its container-management application Container Manager on DSM 7.2 and later; it replaced the application previously called Docker. Older guides and discussions may still use “Docker.” The current name and transition are documented in Synology’s Knowledge Center, last updated February 5, 2026.
Here, “SynoCommunity package” means an application distributed through the SynoCommunity package source and managed in DSM’s Package Center. A container is an application deployed using Container Manager and an image supplied by that application’s publisher or project.
Check compatibility before comparing convenience
Start with your NAS model, its CPU architecture, DSM version, and the exact application you want. A package or image that works on one Synology NAS may not be available for another.

- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
- For a SynoCommunity package: check whether the package supports your DSM version and architecture. SynoCommunity says Package Center filters the listings to packages compatible with the NAS and DSM version. See its compatibility guide and user guide.
- For a container: confirm that Container Manager is offered for your NAS and DSM version, then check that the app’s image supports your device’s architecture. Availability depends on the model, DSM version, and image; there is no universal compatibility rule for every NAS and image.
Package listings and compatibility can change. Check the current Package Center listing and the application’s own image documentation rather than relying on an older guide or a recommendation for a different model.
How the two installation and update paths differ
SynoCommunity package: DSM-integrated management
SynoCommunity’s documented workflow is to add its package source, find the application under Package Center’s Community section, and install it there. Updates are delivered through Package Center, and the package can be uninstalled there. On DSM 7, expect a warning that third-party packages have not been verified by Synology. The steps and warning are described in the SynoCommunity installation guide.

- Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
- Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
- Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
- Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
- Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
This is often the simpler starting point if you already manage your NAS through DSM and the package is available for your device. The specific package still determines what settings are exposed and how it behaves.
Container: configure and maintain the deployment
A container deployment requires following the app publisher’s instructions for its image and configuring the details the app needs. Common responsibilities include mapping persistent storage, setting ports, handling permissions, and updating the image. Do not assume that choosing a container automatically configures backups or keeps the app current; update steps and cadence depend on the project and your own maintenance routine.

SynoCommunity notes that a package’s ports may be fixed; when a container conflicts with one, changing the container’s port mapping may resolve the conflict. Its troubleshooting guide covers this case. Follow the app’s own instructions when choosing mappings so you do not break access to the service.
Trust and security depend on the specific installation
DSM 7’s third-party package warning is a reason to evaluate the package and its maintainer, not proof that every community package is unsafe. Synology’s documented policy addresses whether unsigned third-party packages can run with root privileges: Synology says DSM 7.0 prevents packages not signed by Synology from running as root, citing the risk that root-capable packages could compromise system security. Read the details in Synology’s third-party package support guidance.

A container is not inherently safe simply because it is a container. For either route, assess the exact app’s publisher or maintainer, release history, required privileges, exposed ports, and access to NAS folders. Compare what the package and image actually require; the installation format alone does not establish which one is more secure.

There is no general rule that SynoCommunity packages update more quickly than containers, or that container images are better maintained. Package behavior can depend on DSM components, and DSM changes may affect dependencies. Image maintenance depends on the publisher and on whether you apply updates. For an app available in both forms, compare the maintainers’ recent releases, upgrade notes, supported architectures, required privileges, and documented backup and restore process.

Plan for application data before installing either option. Record where its configuration and data will live and how you will back them up. SynoCommunity says DSM 7 keeps package data by default when a package is uninstalled, while DSM 6 packages often remove associated data. Check the individual package’s behavior and back up important data rather than treating uninstall as a backup or a guaranteed cleanup.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Identify the exact environment: note the NAS model, DSM version, and the application you want.
- Check both routes: look for a compatible SynoCommunity package in Package Center and confirm that Container Manager and a compatible image are available for your NAS.
- Choose the package when it fits: if the package supports your device and DSM version, prefer it as the straightforward option when you value Package Center’s integrated installation and update workflow.
- Choose the container when you can maintain it: use this route when the app is actively distributed as a compatible image and you can manage its storage, port, permission, and image settings.
- If both are viable, compare the app-specific evidence: review each maintainer’s release recency, upgrade notes, backup and restore steps, supported architecture, and required privileges.
- Document data and backups: decide where application data will be stored and how it will be backed up before you install.
