Bitcoin and BNB Smart Chain use different ways to process transactions. Bitcoin uses proof-of-work and spends unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs); BNB Smart Chain uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) and EVM-compatible transactions that pay gas in BNB. That changes how blocks are produced, how fees work, what applications can run, and what confirmations mean.

First, what does “BNB” mean?

BNB is a token; BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is a blockchain that uses BNB for transaction fees. BNB Chain is the wider ecosystem, which also includes opBNB and Greenfield. Those network names are not interchangeable, and BSC is distinct from Binance’s centralized exchange. This comparison is about Bitcoin and BNB Smart Chain, not every part of the BNB Chain ecosystem.

BNB Chain’s BNB Smart Chain introduction describes BSC as EVM-compatible, while its developer quick guide identifies BNB as the token used to pay transaction fees.

Bitcoin vs. BNB Smart Chain at a glance

Feature Bitcoin BNB Smart Chain
Transaction accounting Transactions consume existing UTXOs and create new outputs. The value difference between inputs and outputs can be a fee. EVM-compatible transactions execute on the chain; transactions use gas paid in BNB.
Block production Miners compete using proof-of-work. Nodes follow the valid chain with the greatest accumulated work. A selected validator set produces blocks under PoSA. BNB Chain documentation describes 45 active validators and a 21-validator consensus group per epoch.
Fee mechanism Input value minus output value, claimed by the miner whose block includes the transaction. Gas charges paid in BNB; the amount varies with the transaction and network conditions.
Programmability Bitcoin script rules support its transaction model. Supports EVM-compatible smart contracts and protocols.
Confirmation and finality Each additional proof-of-work block increases confidence, but confirmations are not an absolute guarantee against a chain reorganization. Documentation describes fast finality when sufficient validators vote; otherwise, probabilistic finality applies.

How Bitcoin transactions work

Bitcoin tracks spendable value as individual unspent transaction outputs. A transaction uses one or more existing outputs as inputs and creates outputs for recipients or back to the sender. Each output can be spent only once. The transaction must not create more value in its outputs than it consumes from its inputs; any remaining difference can be claimed by the miner that includes it in a block.

For example, if a transaction’s inputs total more than its outputs, the remainder is not a separate bill sent later: it is available as the transaction fee. The Bitcoin developer guide explains this UTXO model and the fee mechanism in its transactions guide.

Proof-of-work and confirmations

Bitcoin miners try to produce blocks whose hashes meet a difficulty target. Changing an older block requires redoing its work and the work of later blocks. Nodes accept valid blocks and generally follow the valid chain with the most accumulated work. If blocks are found close together, a temporary competing branch can occur before more work resolves which branch prevails.

A confirmation means a transaction has been included in a block; later blocks add work on top of that inclusion. More confirmations increase confidence that the transaction will remain in the accepted history, rather than providing an exact clock-based guarantee. The Bitcoin white paper, dated 2008-10-31, describes the foundational peer-to-peer and proof-of-work design; the developer guide gives the operational explanation.

How BNB Smart Chain transactions work

BNB Smart Chain is an EVM-compatible chain, so it supports smart contracts and protocols designed for the Ethereum Virtual Machine. A transaction may be a straightforward transfer or an instruction that interacts with a contract; not every BSC transaction is a complex contract call.

Transactions consume gas, and the fee is paid in BNB. As the BNB Chain quick guide puts it, “BNB is the native utility token of BNB Smart Chain and is used to pay transaction fees.” The fee depends on the transaction and network conditions, so the mechanism alone does not establish a fixed cost or prove that BSC is always cheaper than Bitcoin.

PoSA validators

BNB Chain’s validator overview describes PoSA and a selected set of 45 active validators: 21 Cabinets and 24 Candidates. For each epoch, documentation says 18 Cabinets and 3 Candidates form the 21-validator consensus group. It also describes slashing for certain failures or malicious behavior. These are documentation’s protocol details, not an assurance that validator arrangements cannot change.

Fees, speed, and settlement: what can be compared?

The networks calculate fees differently, so a useful comparison of actual costs needs matched transactions and contemporaneous measurements. Bitcoin’s fee is the input-output difference; BSC charges gas in BNB. Neither fee model supports a claim that one network always costs less, and a fixed dollar amount would quickly become outdated.

Block interval and finality are also different measures. BNB Chain’s introduction, accessed in 2026, states a 0.45-second BSC mainnet block time after named hardforks and describes finality within two blocks—approximately 1.125 seconds—when at least two-thirds of validators vote normally. The same documentation says insufficient votes lead to probabilistic finality, where additional confirmations increase safety. These are conditional protocol descriptions, not promises that every user transfer settles within that time.

What the design differences mean for users

  • Sending BTC: The transaction spends UTXOs, and the fee comes from the difference between input and output value. Confirmations add proof-of-work-based confidence.
  • Using BSC applications: A transaction may transfer BNB or interact with an EVM-compatible contract; gas is paid in BNB.
  • Assessing block production: Bitcoin relies on mining and accumulated work, while BSC documentation describes a selected validator set and voting-based finality. These are different mechanisms, not by themselves a complete quantitative ranking of decentralization.
  • Choosing a network: Check the exact network a wallet or application expects. BNB on BSC is not a Bitcoin transaction, and BNB Chain’s other networks are not automatically interchangeable with BSC.
