If a selfie looks reversed from left to right, use a horizontal flip—or change the front-camera setting so future photos save the way you expect. If the picture is lying sideways, use rotate instead. Those are different fixes, and “inverted” can mean either one.
First, identify what “inverted” means
Compare the saved photo with the front-camera preview. If left and right have swapped—for example, writing on a shirt appears backwards—the image is mirrored. A sideways frame has been rotated, usually by 90 degrees. Flipping changes left and right; rotating turns the whole frame.
A selfie that differs from its preview is usually a mirror-orientation preference, not by itself evidence of a damaged camera. Camera apps can show a mirror-like preview but save a differently oriented photo.
Stop future selfies from being reversed
iPhone: turn on Mirror Front Camera
- Open Settings > Camera.
- Turn on Mirror Front Camera.
Apple says this captures a selfie “as you see it in the front-facing camera frame, rather than reversing it.” This setting affects future captures; it does not flip photos already saved. See Apple’s instructions for taking a selfie with iPhone. Labels may vary by iOS release.

Google Pixel: save selfies as previewed
- Open the Pixel Camera app.
- Open the down-arrow menu, then tap Settings.
- Select Save selfie as previewed and choose the orientation you want.
Google describes this option as controlling whether saved selfies are mirrored or non-mirrored. Menu placement can change between Camera app versions. See Google’s Pixel Camera guidance.
Other Android phones, including Samsung Galaxy
There is no single Android setting path that applies to every manufacturer, model, or camera app. In the Camera app’s settings, look for an option named something like Mirror, Save as previewed, or Save pictures as previewed. Check your phone maker’s instructions if the option is not obvious.

Flip a selfie you already took
iPhone: use Photos’ horizontal Flip control
- Open the selfie in Photos and tap Edit.
- Open the crop controls and tap Flip.
- Tap Done to save the edit.
This flips the image horizontally. Apple also documents that edits can be reverted if you want to restore the original. The exact control layout may vary by iOS version; see Apple’s instructions for editing photos and videos.

Android: check the phone’s photo editor
For an existing Android selfie, open it in the device’s photo editor and look for a horizontal Flip control. Confirm the result by checking text or another familiar left-right detail. The available instructions here do not establish one current built-in editing path for every Android phone, so the control name and location depend on the device and editor.

- Use Flip when the selfie is upright but appears reversed left to right.
- Use Rotate when the whole image is sideways. Rotating will not correct mirrored text or left-right orientation.
In iPhone Photos, Flip and Rotate are separate crop controls. If you are unsure which issue you have, check whether the photo is upright first, then whether left and right are reversed.
