For an occasional, attended session helping a relative with a Windows problem, start with Microsoft Quick Assist. It is built for help between family or friends: your relative enters a short code, approves screen sharing, and must separately approve full control. TeamViewer and AnyDesk are alternatives if you prefer a third-party tool, but their free options are for personal, non-commercial use and have vendor-defined limits.

Which free remote-access tool should you choose?

Tool Best fit What your relative does Key limit
Microsoft Quick Assist Occasional, attended help between family or friends Enters the helper’s six-digit code, allows screen sharing, and separately approves full control if wanted A work- or school-managed PC may be blocked from installing the app through Microsoft Store. Microsoft says to connect only with a trusted helper. Microsoft’s Quick Assist instructions
TeamViewer Personal, non-commercial remote access, including family tech help; supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS The receiving device needs the client installed; the official page describes an invitation/ID-based connection Free use is limited to personal, non-commercial purposes; business plans are separate. TeamViewer remote access
AnyDesk Occasional non-commercial help for friends and family The helper enters the remote device ID and requests permission The free personal tier is limited; repeated or business-like use may trigger restrictions or upgrade prompts. Do not use it for paid support or work. AnyDesk Personal pricing

There is not enough official information here to declare one tool universally fastest or safest, or to compare session duration, file transfer, unattended access eligibility in each free tier, or every supported Windows release. For family troubleshooting, weigh whether the relative can approve each step, whether the tool works on both devices, and whether the current license terms fit your use.

How to help a relative with Quick Assist

  1. Open Quick Assist on your PC. Choose Help someone and share the six-digit code with your relative through a channel they trust.
  2. Have your relative enter the code. They must allow the connection and screen sharing before you can see their screen.
  3. Request full control only if needed. Your relative approves this separately and can decline it while still sharing their screen.
  4. End the session when the task is done. Either person can leave the session. Ask your relative to disconnect when they are ready.

Microsoft’s Quick Assist instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. The app may need to be installed from Microsoft Store; organizational policy can block Store access on a work- or school-managed PC. Microsoft also lists WebView2 as a requirement and notes that installation issues can affect some older Windows builds.

Keep the session under your relative’s control

Remote access can expose what is on the screen and, if approved, let the helper control the PC. Before connecting, have your relative initiate the session and verify your identity through a separate channel, such as a phone call. Explain whether you need to view the screen or take control, and why. They should approve only what they understand and end the connection once help is complete.

#1 Best Overall

Do not accept an unexpected remote-support request from someone claiming to be Microsoft or another company. Microsoft warns users to allow a helper only when they initiated contact with Microsoft Support directly. Its Quick Assist page also distinguishes the family-help desktop app from a web app reserved for verified Microsoft support agents. See Microsoft’s guidance on tech-support scams.

When TeamViewer or AnyDesk makes sense

TeamViewer

Choose TeamViewer if you want a third-party option and need support across several operating systems. TeamViewer lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS support on its remote-access page and describes its free option as personal, non-commercial use. That suits unpaid family help, not professional or paid support. The receiving device needs the client installed.

AnyDesk

AnyDesk describes its free personal option as suitable for non-commercial remote access, including helping family. Its personal-use page also says the free version is limited; repeated or business-like use can bring restrictions or upgrade prompts. The page describes optional unattended access, but that should not be the default for troubleshooting a relative’s PC: an attended session keeps the person using the computer involved in approving access.

How to make the choice

  • Choose Quick Assist when you are helping someone you know in a session they can approve step by step.
  • Consider TeamViewer if its listed multi-platform support better matches the devices involved and the use remains personal and non-commercial.
  • Consider AnyDesk for occasional, non-commercial family help if its current limits suit your needs.
  • Check current terms and compatibility before installing a third-party tool; free-tier features and restrictions can change.
