Freely streams live TV over broadband; Freeview delivers live TV through a terrestrial aerial. Choose Freely if your broadband is reliable and you want TV without an aerial socket. Choose Freeview if your aerial reception is good and you want live channels to keep working when your internet is down. Freeview Play adds internet-connected catch-up and on-demand features, so Freeview is not entirely offline.
Freely and Freeview differ in how live TV reaches your screen
| What matters | Freely | Freeview and Freeview Play |
|---|---|---|
| Live TV delivery | Streams over broadband; an aerial is not required. | Terrestrial live TV on a television needs an aerial. |
| Internet | Required for viewing. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming and on-demand viewing; this is guidance, not a guaranteed quality threshold. | Basic terrestrial live TV can work without internet. Freeview Play catch-up and on-demand features need internet; Freeview lists 2 Mbps as a minimum for those services. |
| Aerial | Optional for streamed viewing. On supported TVs, an aerial can add terrestrial channels. | Needed for terrestrial live TV; local coverage and aerial condition affect reception. |
| Connected viewing | Brings live and on-demand content together and advertises restart features. Availability depends on the service, device and programme. | Freeview Play adds connected players and catch-up/on-demand alongside live TV in its guide. |
| Equipment | A supported Freely TV or compatible streaming device. | A compatible TV or receiver and an aerial for live terrestrial TV; Freeview Play also requires compatible connected equipment. |
Freely and Freeview are coexisting ways to receive free-to-view television, not a completed replacement transition. Freely’s comparison guide, dated 22 July 2026, describes the central distinction as aerial delivery for Freeview versus broadband and Wi-Fi for Freely: Freely’s comparison guide.
Which should you choose?
Choose Freely if your broadband is dependable
- You want live TV in a room without an aerial socket or do not want to rely on an aerial installation.
- You have a compatible television or streaming device and broadband that can support streaming.
- You prefer live and on-demand viewing presented together.
Choose Freeview if your aerial reception is usable
- You want terrestrial live TV to work independently of broadband.
- Your address receives the channels you watch and your aerial is in suitable condition.
- You already have compatible equipment and prefer not to depend on streaming for live channels.
Choose based on the channels you actually watch
Channel totals are not a like-for-like measure: the platforms deliver content differently, and local Freeview coverage varies. Freely’s comparison guide dated 22 July 2026 reports more than 70 live channels, including 35+ in HD, and over 75,000 hours of on-demand programming. These are Freely-published figures, not an independent audit, and availability can change. Freeview’s page says over 100 channels, but gives no publication year for that figure and says availability depends on location and coverage. Check whether the specific channels you want are currently available to you rather than choosing by headline total: Freeview’s service overview and Freely’s comparison guide.
What you need to set up each service
Freely: supported device and broadband
Freely requires a supported Freely TV or streaming device and an internet connection. Its equipment guidance recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming and on-demand viewing. Some supported TVs can also take an aerial, letting you add terrestrial channels to the Freely guide; an aerial is not required for Freely’s streamed viewing. Freely says that after the TV Licence there are no extra Freely service costs, which does not mean broadband or equipment is free. See Freely’s equipment guidance and connection guidance.

If you already own a television with HDMI but it is not Freely-enabled, Freely says it can be used with a compatible streaming device. Its 19 February 2026 launch article names Manhattan Aero and Netgem PLEIO. A Freely compatibility guide dated 21 August 2026 says Samsung, LG and Sony TVs did not have Freely built in at the time of publication and directs owners to streaming devices. Check current support for the exact TV or device before buying, as compatibility can change: Freely’s streaming-device announcement and Freely’s TV compatibility guide.
Freeview: compatible equipment and a working aerial
For live Freeview on a television, you need a compatible TV, box or recorder and a working aerial pointed toward a transmitter. Freeview recommends a wideband aerial for best results, but whether that helps depends on your location and installation. Check your postcode and the channels available before paying for an aerial or installation. If reception remains poor, Freeview recommends contacting a qualified aerial installer. Its aerial guidance explains the role of coverage, aerial condition and direction.

Picture quality depends on the content and your connection or signal
There is no established universal picture-quality winner. Freely conditions high-resolution availability on the content and broadband, while Freeview results depend on broadcast coverage and signal quality. A strong connection or usable aerial reception is more relevant to your household than a blanket claim that one platform always looks better.

Both services can have TV Licence implications
Freely says a TV Licence is needed to watch or record live TV and to use BBC iPlayer. Freeview says a licence applies to watching broadcast TV. Free access to channels does not itself mean an exemption. Check current Freeview licensing guidance and Freely’s equipment guidance against your circumstances.
