Use Apple Notes’ built-in formatting controls to add headings, organize text into lists or checklists, and separate sections with a divider. The steps differ by device: iPhone and iPad use the Format controls, while Mac also offers a menu command and keyboard shortcut.
Format a note on iPhone

Open a note and tap where you want to format text. In a new note, the first line becomes the note’s title, as Apple explains in its iPhone Notes guide.

Tap the Format control, then choose a paragraph style such as Heading or a text style such as bold or italic.

To organize a longer note, select the text you want to use as a section heading and apply Heading or Subheading. Where supported, use the adjacent collapse or expand control to hide or show that section.

For items, use the list options in Format. Choose the Checklist control when you want items that can be checked off.
Format a note on iPad

Tap in the note where you want to add or change text, then tap Format and choose a style such as Heading. Apple’s iPad Notes guide describes the formatting controls.

To add a divider, place the insertion point where the line should appear, open the expanded controls, and choose Insert Divider Line.

Use the available list or checklist controls to structure items; use a checklist if the items need to be marked complete.

Format a note on Mac

Click in the note, then use the Format control to apply a paragraph style such as title, heading, subheading, or body. Apple documents these options in its Mac Notes guide.

For a divider, choose Edit > Insert Divider Line, or press Command-L.

Use the available list or checklist formatting controls to organize items according to whether they are simply grouped or need to be checked off.
Mac account requirements for styles and collapsible sections
Apple specifies that paragraph styles and the default new-note style setting require iCloud notes or notes stored on the Mac. Collapsible sections also require one of those account types. If formatting options or section controls are missing, check whether the note is in one of those accounts.

Choose the right formatting

Use a heading or subheading to show the structure of a long note; where supported, headings can also provide collapsible sections.

Use a regular list for grouped items and a checklist for tasks that need completion marks.

Use a divider line when you need a visual break between parts of a note rather than another heading.
Control locations and labels can vary by device and operating-system version. If a listed option is not where expected, check the formatting controls on the installed version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS.
