If your Xbox storage is full and a Game Pass game will not download, free space by uninstalling games you are not playing or move titles to another storage device. Game Pass downloads use your console’s game storage; there is no separate Game Pass-only storage procedure. A compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card can run Series X|S optimized games directly, while a USB external drive is useful for storing and moving games but is not a direct-play option for every optimized title.
Free space by removing games you are not playing
Start by reviewing installed games and apps, then uninstall titles you have finished or do not currently want available. Xbox’s Manage storage on your Xbox console page is the official starting point for managing console storage.
Menu names and paths can vary with Xbox software updates, so follow the current instructions shown on your console rather than relying on an outdated button sequence. If you need help with the uninstall process, see Xbox Support’s uninstall and reinstall guidance.
Choose storage based on whether you want to play from it
For Series X|S, the key difference is not just how much room a device adds, but whether a game can launch directly from it. Xbox Wire’s 2020 storage explainer describes installing to and playing games from the Storage Expansion Card, as well as moving or copying titles between local and external storage. Microsoft’s Series S specifications list support for both Storage Expansion Cards and USB 3.1 external hard drives.

| Option | Best for | Can you play directly from it? |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall games you are not using | Freeing existing space without buying storage | No; the game is removed from the console until reinstalled. |
| Compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card | Adding storage for games you want ready to play | Yes. Xbox Wire says games can be installed to and played directly from the card. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Keeping a larger library archived or moving games off internal storage | Not for every Series X|S optimized game. Use it as storage or a transfer destination unless direct-play compatibility is established for the title. |
When an expansion card makes sense
Choose a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card if you want more space for games that you can launch from the added storage without moving them back to the console’s internal drive. Xbox Wire’s storage explainer says players can set games to install to the card by default, play from it, and move or copy games between local and external storage. Microsoft’s Series S specifications list Storage Expansion Card support; check current compatibility and capacity before buying a specific card. Xbox Support also has a guide to using the Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S.
When a USB external drive makes sense
A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD can provide room to keep games stored and move them between devices or storage locations. It is a practical choice if you are comfortable transferring a game before playing it. Do not assume every Series X|S optimized game can be launched directly from a USB drive: Xbox Wire distinguishes storage and transfer use from playing directly from the Expansion Card. Confirm the requirements for a particular game if direct play from USB matters to you.

What happens to a game you uninstall?
Uninstalling removes the game from the console’s installed storage; it is the option to use when you need local space and are willing to reinstall or transfer the title later. The cited support guidance covers uninstalling and reinstalling, but does not establish that save data is deleted, that every save is cloud-backed, or that a removed Game Pass title will remain available indefinitely. Do not rely on any of those outcomes without checking current Xbox guidance for your situation.
