Bitcoin and U.S. Treasury bills are not interchangeable places to hold cash. A bill has a defined maturity and pays its face value at maturity; Bitcoin has no maturity date or promised payment, and its market price can change sharply. Which may fit depends chiefly on when you need the money, whether you can hold a bill to maturity, and whether you can withstand Bitcoin’s price and infrastructure risks.
This is general information, not individualized investment advice. The comparison below does not provide a live bill yield: Treasury rates change, and a quoted rate needs a date, maturity, and calculation convention to be meaningful.
How the two assets produce returns
Treasury bills: a defined maturity payment
Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities with maturities of one year or less. They are sold at face value or at a discount, and Treasury pays face value at maturity; the difference between the purchase price and face value is the bill’s return. The mechanics and terms are described by TreasuryDirect.
A bill’s quoted rate is not a timeless promise of what every buyer will earn. Treasury’s daily bill rates are indicative secondary-market quotations for recently auctioned bills, taken at about 3:30 p.m. on business days. The bank discount convention uses par value and a 360-day year, so the quote should not be compared casually with a return calculated on a different basis. See the Treasury interest-rate data and its bill-rate convention explanation.

Bitcoin: return depends on the sale price
Bitcoin does not have a contractual maturity payment or Treasury-like cash yield established by the cited disclosures. A holder’s return depends on the price available when the Bitcoin is sold, after any relevant costs. An SEC-filed disclosure states, “The price of bitcoin is highly volatile,” and warns that investors could lose all or substantially all of an investment. Read the filing’s Bitcoin-related risk disclosures.
Risk: maturity value is not the same as being risk-free
If you hold a bill to maturity
A bill held to maturity pays face value under its terms. That is a different risk profile from Bitcoin’s uncertain market price, but it does not make a bill risk-free in every sense. Inflation can reduce the purchasing power of the proceeds; the rate available when you reinvest may differ; and a buyer who needs to sell before maturity faces a market price that can move as yields change.

If you sell a bill early
The maturity payment does not guarantee that an early sale will return the purchase price. When market yields rise, an existing bill may be worth less on the secondary market; when yields fall, its resale value may rise. The price available depends on market conditions and execution at the time of sale.
Bitcoin’s price and infrastructure risks
Bitcoin has no maturity date to align with a future bill payment. Its market price may be materially lower when an investor needs to sell. SEC-filed disclosures also describe risks beyond price movement, including custody and security failures, theft, fraud, manipulation, regulatory uncertainty, and interruptions or other problems at trading venues.

Liquidity: look beyond trading volume
Liquidity is the ability to trade without an excessive cost or a large price move. The Federal Reserve’s framework considers bid-ask spreads, quoted market depth, and price impact—not just whether an asset trades frequently. See the Federal Reserve’s Treasury-market liquidity discussion.
Treasury bills can be bought at auction through TreasuryDirect or through a financial intermediary. If you need cash before maturity, however, you depend on a secondary-market sale and the price then available. Bitcoin trades across multiple venues; fragmented prices, platform outages, and liquidity disruptions can affect execution or access. An SEC-filed disclosure discusses these Bitcoin market and venue risks.

For either asset, consider the spread between buy and sell prices, the quantity available near the quoted price, likely price impact for your trade size, and practical access or settlement conditions. A single label such as “liquid” does not answer whether you can sell the amount you need at the time and price you expect.

Buying Treasury bills
TreasuryDirect accepts noncompetitive auction bids from individual investors. Banks, brokers, and dealers are other routes. TreasuryDirect explains these bill purchase options. The route matters if you may want to sell before maturity, so check the intermediary’s terms and available market access rather than assuming every purchase channel works the same way.

Holding and trading Bitcoin
Bitcoin exposure can involve a trading venue and a custody arrangement, each with its own operational risks. Venue failure or disruption can impede trading; custody or security failures can jeopardize access to holdings. These risks are separate from the possibility that Bitcoin’s market price falls.
When each may fit
A bill may suit a known near-term cash date
A Treasury bill may be relevant to consider when you have a relatively near-term cash need, want a defined maturity and face-value payment, and can match the bill’s maturity to your intended date. This fit depends on being able to hold the bill to maturity or accepting the price uncertainty and access conditions of an early sale. Evaluate the bill’s dated yield using its quote convention and your holding period.
Bitcoin belongs in a different risk conversation
Bitcoin may be relevant to someone considering a speculative digital asset who understands there is no maturity payment and can tolerate substantial price swings, potential loss, custody risks, and venue or market-structure disruptions. It should not be treated as a substitute for money that must be available in a fixed amount on a fixed date.
What a fair comparison cannot claim
A current Treasury yield and a Bitcoin “yield” are not directly comparable measures: the former is a dated rate quotation under a stated convention, while the cited materials establish no equivalent contractual Bitcoin yield. The cited sources also do not provide a standardized side-by-side liquidity score or establish future returns for either asset. Treasury’s daily rate series is the place to check for a current bill quote, using its date and maturity rather than treating an older observation as today’s rate.
