Before converting a large image batch, set the output format, compression or quality, resize behavior, metadata and color-profile handling, destination, and filename or overwrite rules. Then run a small representative sample and inspect it before processing everything. The exact controls vary by application and file type, so treat this as a checklist—not a universal preset.
1. Confirm the files you intend to convert
Check the source selection before changing output settings. Verify that the right files are included and whether the conversion should include subfolders. Photoshop’s batch options, for example, include source-location controls and an option to include all subfolders: Adobe’s batch-processing instructions.
2. Choose an output format that fits the destination
Start with the requirements of the person, service, or application that will receive the files. Confirm that both the converter and the destination support the format. Available choices depend on the tool: Photoshop Image Processor provides file-type options, while ShareX documents conversion to PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Neither list establishes a best format for every job.
For image delivery, consider whether the recipient needs a particular format and whether the files will be edited again. Avoid converting the whole batch just because a format is available in the menu; first check compatibility and the purpose of the output.

3. Set quality or compression for that format
Use the quality control for the chosen format, if the converter offers one, and judge the result at the size at which the images will actually be used. ShareX documents quality controls for JPEG and WebP; Adobe Image Processor describes JPEG quality on a 0–12 scale. Those controls belong to different applications and should not be compared as if their numbers were equivalent.
There is no evidence-based universal quality number for an unspecified converter and destination. Compare a test output with its source, paying attention to visible artifacts and file size, before applying the setting to the full batch.

4. Decide whether dimensions should change
Do not assume that changing encoding also resizes an image. ShareX says its image converter changes encoding, not dimensions. Corel AfterShot separately offers do-not-resize and fit-to-dimensions options.
Keep the original pixel dimensions unless the delivery requirement calls for resizing. If you do resize, set bounds that match the destination and check how the application handles aspect ratio; a fit-to-dimensions option may constrain the result differently from an exact width-and-height setting.

5. Choose what happens to metadata and color profiles
Decide whether the output needs its existing metadata and embedded color profile. Corel AfterShot exposes controls for EXIF, XMP, copyright information, and color-profile embedding. Adobe Image Processor also provides a copyright-metadata option. These controls can affect what information travels with the image, so make the choice according to delivery or privacy requirements rather than relying on a default.
6. Set the destination, filenames, and collision behavior
Choose an output folder that is easy to inspect and select a naming pattern that keeps files distinct. Before starting, check what the converter does if an output name already exists. Behavior is application-specific: Adobe says Image Processor saves each processed file with a unique name and does not overwrite the original. Corel AfterShot and ShareX expose other naming or overwrite controls, so check their settings rather than assuming Adobe’s behavior applies.

7. Run a sample, then check errors and results
Use a representative sample that includes the kinds of images in the batch, such as different dimensions or orientations. If possible, write the test to a separate folder. Inspect the preview and resulting files for format, visual quality, dimensions, metadata, and naming before committing to the full run. ShareX recommends inspecting the preview and using a separate output folder when testing; PaintShop Pro’s batch instructions say to review output settings before running.
Also check how the application reports failures and what completion information it provides. Photoshop batch options include error handling, and VideoStudio describes a task report after conversion. Review the report and spot-check outputs so that failed or unexpected files do not go unnoticed.

8. Save a profile if you repeat the same conversion
If the same combination of format, dimensions, metadata, destination, and naming rules is used regularly, save those choices as a reusable profile when the application supports it. Corel VideoStudio documents creating and applying batch-conversion profiles. A saved profile can reduce setup time, but verify it when the destination or delivery requirements change.
