Follow the instructions for the exact blaster, use eye protection as its manual directs, clear and control the play area, and never aim at anyone’s eyes or face. Hasbro’s standard-blaster instructions recommend eyewear for players and people within range; its Nerf Pro Sender instructions require it.
What the blaster’s instructions say about eye protection
Eye-protection guidance differs by model, so check the manual and warning label for the blaster being used rather than assuming one rule applies to every Nerf product.

These are model-specific details, not a brand-wide age rating or universal eyewear rule. See Hasbro’s Double Punch instructions and Hasbro’s Nerf Pro Sender instructions.
For the cited standard blaster, Hasbro says eyewear is recommended; for the Pro Sender, it says eyewear is always required. Follow the stricter wording when that is what your model’s instructions say. If choosing separate protective eyewear, verify its rating and fit. Ordinary glasses or unverified toy goggles should not be assumed to meet a protective standard.

Rules to set before playing
Hasbro’s warnings give the core rules: do not aim at eyes or faces, use the specified official darts, and do not modify the blaster or darts. The standard-blaster instructions specify official Nerf darts; the Pro Sender specifies official Nerf Pro darts. Use the ammunition named in your model’s manual.
- Protect everyone within range. Apply the eyewear guidance in the blaster’s instructions to players and nearby people.
- Keep nonparticipants out of play. Agree that people who are not playing—and pets—stay outside the area where darts may travel.
- Set a stop signal. Pause immediately when someone calls it, a person enters the play area, or a rule is ignored. End the game if participants cannot follow the rules.
- Use only the specified darts. Do not substitute other darts or alter darts or blasters; Hasbro warns that other darts may not meet safety standards.
Hasbro’s official warning for standard blasters reads: “Do not aim at eyes or face. Use of eyewear recommended for players and people within range. Use only official Nerf darts. Other darts may not meet safety standards. Do not modify darts or blaster.” The Pro Sender’s corresponding warning says eyewear is “always required” and specifies official Nerf Pro darts.

How to judge whether a room is suitable
There is no source-backed universal minimum room size, wall distance, or layout for indoor Nerf play. A room is not suitable simply because it is indoors or because the blaster is marketed as a toy. Consider the space, obstacles, who else is nearby, and whether everyone can follow the rules.
- Check the open play area. Make sure participants have room to move without colliding with furniture or one another. If the space is too cramped to play without aiming toward faces or moving unsafely, choose another activity or location.
- Remove hazards and breakables. As a practical precaution—not a manufacturer measurement—clear loose objects that could cause trips and move fragile items and sharp-edged furniture out of the play zone where possible.
- Keep bystanders and younger children clear. Follow the toy’s age label, and consider whether younger children in the home could enter the play area. CPSC general toy-safety guidance advises considering the surroundings and available play space, and keeping younger children away from toys intended for older children.
- Inspect the blaster and darts. Do not use damaged toys or darts. CPSC advises checking toys for breakage; put toys away after play to reduce trip and fall hazards.

What injury figures do—and do not—tell you
The American Academy of Pediatrics reported a 168.8% increase in the rate of eye injuries associated with nonpowder guns over the study period, and said 48.5% of hospitalizations in its dataset were associated with nonpowder guns. In that study population, corneal abrasion accounted for 27.1% of injuries, conjunctivitis 10.0%, and a foreign body in the eye 8.5%.
Those figures concern nonpowder guns broadly; they are not a Nerf-specific injury rate and should not be read as the likelihood of injury during indoor Nerf play. The AAP’s article discusses recreation and nonpowder guns in general, not Nerf alone. A separate CPSC recall involving a different projectile toy cited an eye-injury hazard after the product failed federal projectile-toy safety requirements; it is context, not evidence of a Nerf defect or risk estimate.
