Protecting sleep starts with reserving enough uninterrupted time away from work, then making your availability and escalation rules clear. NIOSH recommends at least 10 consecutive off-duty hours to make room for 7–8 hours of sleep. That is schedule guidance—not a guarantee of sleep or a universal legal entitlement—and it may require changes to workload, staffing, or shift design, not just personal discipline.
Find what is cutting into your sleep
Before setting a boundary, identify the pattern you need to change. For a week or two, note when work ends, when you try to sleep, and what interrupts the time between them. Look for late meetings, messages you feel obliged to answer, short turnarounds between shifts, on-call expectations, unfinished work, or a schedule that changes your sleep timing.
Separate occasional interruptions from recurring causes. A one-off request may need a clear response; repeated late work or inadequate recovery time is a scheduling and workload issue to raise with your manager. NIOSH describes fatigue prevention as a shared responsibility of workers and employers, including attention to schedules and psychological work conditions. CDC/NIOSH, “Fatigue and Work”; CDC/NIOSH, “Work Organization Strategies to Promote Alertness and Health in Nurses”.
Reserve a realistic sleep opportunity
Start with the time you need to sleep, then work backward to allow for winding down, personal responsibilities, and the transition away from work. NIOSH recommends establishing at least 10 consecutive hours of protected off-duty time per day to make room for 7–8 hours of sleep. It also recommends reasonable work hours that allow responders to sleep and recuperate after shifts. These are fatigue-risk-management recommendations, not a promise that everyone will sleep for the same duration or a statement of employment law. CDC/NIOSH, “Safe Work Practices for Managers and Workers”.

Make the window fit your actual work and sleep schedule. A fixed daytime schedule may allow a consistent evening cutoff; night or rotating shifts may require daytime sleep and protection from interruptions then. NIOSH’s material on timing sleep is intended to help workers adapt sleep timing to work schedules, and its nurse guidance is occupationally specific rather than a one-size-fits-all prescription. CDC/NIOSH, “Timing Sleep to Fit Your Work Schedule”.
State when you are available—and what counts as urgent
Tell colleagues when your workday ends, when you will next check messages, and how to reach the appropriate person for a genuine urgent issue. For example: “I’m offline after my shift and will respond during my next work period. If something is urgent, use our agreed escalation route.” Adapt the wording to your role and team’s actual coverage arrangements.

Agree on what qualifies as urgent rather than leaving every message open to interpretation. If you are expected to monitor a phone or inbox outside regular hours, clarify who is on call, how the handoff works, and whether routine requests can wait. NIOSH notes that maintaining email and phone contact outside regular work hours can reduce time for personal responsibilities and sleep, increasing health and safety risks. Claire C. Caruso, “Workplace Strategies to Reduce Risks from Shift Work, Long Work Hours, and Related Fatigue Issues,” in the 2019 *Total Worker Health* volume.
Pause before accepting new work
You do not have to answer a new request with an immediate yes. NIOSH suggests telling the requester you will consider it and get back to them, then weighing it against your other demands. A short pause gives you room to ask what should move if the new task must be done.

- “Which existing task should I defer to make room for this?”
- “Can this wait until my next work period, or is it covered by the urgent escalation process?”
When priorities conflict, ask what can be moved, delegated, or dropped. NIOSH’s high-demands guidance emphasizes prioritizing because not every task can be the highest priority at once. CDC/NIOSH, “Strategies to Cope with High Demands from Work and Home, Plan”.
Address recurring boundary breaches as work-design problems
If late requests, long hours, or short gaps between shifts keep making your protected window impractical, bring the pattern to a manager with concrete examples. Ask to review workload, staffing, handoffs, on-call expectations, meeting times, or schedule design. Depending on what is feasible, NIOSH suggests discussing reassignment to another shift schedule or considering reduced hours when work demands are too high.

Individual boundaries cannot compensate for an unsafe or chronically demanding schedule. NIOSH’s guidance for employers and workers calls for shared action to reduce fatigue risk; the appropriate fix may require organizational changes rather than asking a worker to try harder to disconnect. CDC/NIOSH, “Safe Work Practices for Managers and Workers”; CDC/NIOSH, “Work Organization Strategies to Promote Alertness and Health in Nurses”.

A brief shutdown routine can make the boundary easier to follow. Close work applications or leave the work area, note the first task for the next work period, and switch to a regular wind-down routine. If you work from home, set limits around both time and physical space so work does not occupy the entire home or evening. NIOSH recommends detaching at the end of the workday and maintaining consistent sleep and wake timing. Ongoing difficulty sleeping or excessive sleepiness at work should not be treated as a boundary-setting failure. NIOSH advises seeking assessment from a healthcare provider who specializes in sleep disorders for persistent sleep difficulties or excessive work-time sleepiness.
