Keep an AI-generated game private or restricted while it is in development, then invite testers through the narrowest access option the hosting platform supports. Before sharing or publishing, check who can play, edit, publish, or copy the game; review what the game reveals; and verify AI-content, account-privacy, and creator data-sharing settings separately. A private game setting does not automatically make your profile or other account information private.
Choose the right kind of access
“Private,” “unlisted,” “draft,” and “restricted” do not mean the same thing on every platform. A private project is generally intended for its creator or team; a restricted project admits approved people; a password or playtest link gives access to people who have the credential or meet the platform’s conditions; and a public project is available to a wider audience under the platform’s rules.

These distinctions are platform-specific. Treat a shareable link as a way to grant access, not as a promise that nobody else can obtain it.
Set up a controlled test
- Identify where the game and account settings live. The creation tool, distribution page, and player-profile service may have separate controls.
- Set the project to private or restricted before inviting testers. Read the platform’s explanation of who qualifies for access. Do not assume that “unlisted,” “draft,” or “link-only” prevents a recipient from forwarding access.
- Choose the narrowest suitable invitation method. Prefer selected accounts, approved-user access, a revocable key, or a dedicated playtest feature. Share a password separately when possible. If the platform places a password in the URL, treat the entire URL as a credential and share it only with intended testers.
- Give testers only the permissions they need. Someone who only needs to play does not necessarily need editing, publishing, or copy/download rights.
- Inspect the game and its page before sending invitations. Review prompts, dialogue, player-facing chat, names, screenshots, descriptions, and metadata for personal details or anything you do not intend to share.
- Review the experience, not just the access setting. Check likely AI outputs and player interactions against the platform’s content, audience, and disclosure rules.
- Check account and creator data controls separately. Review profile visibility and account data access, then check any creator setting about using published games or assets for AI training.
- End the test deliberately. Remove testers or revoke keys when access is no longer needed. If available, inspect the project as a logged-out or uninvited viewer.
- Recheck discoverability before release. Confirm whether a public page will appear in platform listings, profiles, or external search.
Roblox: private projects, playtests, and collaborators
Set the audience in Creator Hub
Roblox says new games are private by default and distinguishes Private access, limited audiences, and Public availability. Some audience choices have publishing eligibility requirements, including age-check, account-standing, and content-maturity conditions. Check the current eligibility shown in Creator Hub rather than assuming an audience switch alone makes a game available to everyone you intend to reach. Use Build playtests only within their stated limits
Roblox Build documents a private playtest link for up to 10 friends before publication. Playtesters need Roblox accounts and must be at least 9 years old. These are Build-specific conditions, not a general limit or eligibility rule for every Roblox creation workflow. The documentation treats private testing and public publishing as different actions. Separate playing from editing and copying
Review collaborator permissions for play, edit, and publish access individually. Roblox says games are locked against other creators editing place files by default, and it documents a separate setting that allows users to download an editable copy. Do not grant copy or editing access simply because someone needs to test the game. Roblox’s collaboration documentation explains these controls.

Review AI-generated content and training preferences
Roblox states: “When using third-party tools: You are responsible for the content delivered to users, even if it’s AI-generated.” If players interact with a generative model in certain games, Roblox also requires disclosure. Check the applicable rules for the game’s features and audience. Read Roblox’s publishing requirements.
Creator data sharing is another setting, separate from whether a game is private or public. Roblox documents a choice about sharing eligible published games and assets for AI training, with a global default and per-item overrides; defaults differ by publication date. Check the current default and the specific item’s setting in the publishing dashboard. Roblox explains AI data sharing for creators.

itch.io: Draft, Restricted, and Public visibility
Draft is not necessarily secret
itch.io describes Draft as primarily for the owner’s work in progress, but says someone with the secret link can access it. Use the visibility description in your project settings and do not treat the word “Draft” as a guarantee of owner-only access.
Restricted is for approved access
Restricted projects are for people the creator has approved. itch.io says they do not appear in its browse or search results, on profile pages, or in external search indexing. The platform supports download keys and an optional password; keys can be revoked. If a password is included directly in a URL, it can travel with the forwarded link. Public and unlisted concern discoverability, not identical access
Public projects can be listed and indexed externally. A public-but-unlisted option changes how easily people discover a page; it should not be treated as equivalent to access restriction, because someone with the URL may still be able to reach it. Confirm the project’s current visibility and access behavior in itch.io’s settings before sharing.

Google Play Games profile visibility and access to a player’s gaming community list are account controls, not controls for making a creator’s game private. Google lets users manage profile visibility and choose whether games can access the gaming community list globally or per game. When access is granted, the game receives gamer names of mutual followers, not email addresses; Google also sets limits on purpose, retention, and onward sharing. If your game uses Play Games profiles, make sure you understand what player data it requests and why. Do not infer that a private project changes what a game can access from a player’s account.
Review AI safety and release obligations
Keeping a game private limits its audience; it does not remove the creator’s responsibility for what the game delivers. Roblox says creators remain responsible for content delivered through third-party tools, including AI-generated content. Google Play similarly makes developers responsible for prohibited or harmful AI-generated content and applies user-generated-content rules to apps that host AI-generated material. Google Play’s AI-generated content policy describes these requirements.
Before inviting testers or publishing, test likely outputs and player interactions, and follow the relevant platform’s community standards, audience maturity requirements, and disclosure rules. Review the actual experience rather than assuming that an AI tool or platform automatically catches every unsafe output or private detail.
