A useful prompt for NPC dialogue is different from one for a character concept or generated world, so tailor the instructions to the output and tool.
Start with a clear target
Name the deliverable—such as an NPC response, a character description, an environment, or another asset—and explain what it should accomplish in the game. “Write dialogue” is a starting point; a stronger brief says who is speaking, what is happening, and what the exchange needs to do for the player.
OpenAI recommends clear, specific instructions and enough context to answer the request. Its guidance also notes that model outputs are non-deterministic: different model types and snapshots may respond differently. A prompt can improve the odds of getting a useful result, but it cannot guarantee an identical answer every time. OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guidance explains the general approach.
Build a prompt around the game task
For a generated world or character
For Google DeepMind’s Genie, the prompt guide separates the environment, character, and preview. Describe the environment’s landscape, terrain, visual style, objects, atmosphere, and behavior. For the character, specify identity or appearance, abilities, movement, and how that movement affects the surroundings. Google DeepMind advises: “Keep your descriptions to-the-point. Short declarative sentences work well.” This is Genie-specific product guidance, not a universal formula for every image or world-generation tool. Read Google DeepMind’s Genie prompt guide.
#1 Best Overall
An adaptable structure is:
Environment: [place, terrain, visual style, important objects, atmosphere, environmental behavior]
Character: [identity and appearance, abilities, movement, relationship to the environment]
Goal: [what the player should be able to see, do, or understand]
Rank #2
Constraints: [required details, exclusions, camera or perspective if supported]

Check the generated preview before entering the world, as Genie’s guide recommends. If a key feature is absent or the environment behaves incorrectly, revise the relevant part of the prompt rather than rewriting unrelated details.
For NPC dialogue
Give the model a character and a scene, not just a line to write. Include the NPC’s background, motivations, relationships, values when relevant, and speaking style. Add the location and recent events, then state what the interaction should accomplish. Constraints can specify tone, length, lore, and information the NPC must not reveal.
Rank #3
A Google-published community article about Gemini-powered NPCs recommends writing from the game or story designer’s perspective and leaving room for player agency and unexpected turns. Avoid scripting every possible response if the player should be able to choose what to do next. See the Google Developers article on Gemini-powered NPCs.
You are writing dialogue for [NPC role] in [game and scene]. The NPC’s background and motivation are [details]. They speak in [voice and style]. In this interaction, the player is trying to [goal]. Respond in [length/format], stay consistent with [lore and constraints], and do not reveal [restricted information]. Leave space for the player’s next choice.

Make the important details observable
Use details the model can act on. Depending on the task, specify tone, length, output format, objects, actions, movement, or information the result must include. For a visual or world prompt, sensory detail can establish mood; for dialogue, voice and disclosure limits help keep the response in character.
Rank #4
- Purpose: What should the output help the player see, understand, feel, or do?
- Context: Which setting, scene, audience, player role, or lore is relevant?
- Requirements: What must be included, and what must be excluded?
- Form: Should the response be a short exchange, a structured description, or another defined format?
Include relevant constraints rather than piling on details that do not affect the result. If the output is overloaded or contradictory, simplify the request so its priorities are clear.
Review the result, then revise deliberately
- Check the brief: Does the output match the requested deliverable, format, and purpose?
- Check game fit: Does it respect the lore, character voice, scene, and intended gameplay outcome?
- Identify the specific miss: Is context missing, an instruction ambiguous, or a constraint too broad?
- Change one or a few things: Add the missing context, clarify the ambiguous instruction, or simplify the overloaded request.
- Compare again: Judge the revised result against the same criteria as the original.
OpenAI recommends reviewing and refining prompts iteratively. Changing only a few things at a time makes it easier to see whether a revision helped. The checklist above is a practical way to apply that advice, not a published benchmark.

A single promising sample does not show whether a prompt will work consistently. For repeated use, turn the requirements into checks or an evaluation suite, then monitor results when the prompt or model changes. OpenAI recommends measuring prompt behavior and pinning model snapshots in production applications to manage changes in model behavior. OpenAI’s guidance on prompt engineering and evaluation covers these practices.
Best Value
Track the prompt version, model or snapshot, output, and review notes in a shared document or other record. That makes it easier to compare revisions and investigate changes; it does not remove the need to check that the content fits the game.
Why game teams are applying AI to these tasks
Unity’s 2024 Gaming Report said that, among surveyed developers adopting AI tools, 63% used generative technology for asset creation and 56% used AI for worldbuilding. Among creators using AI for worldbuilding, 64% favored AI for developing NPCs. These figures describe the surveyed populations in that report, not all developers or creators. See Unity’s 2024 Gaming Report.
