If your new 5G phone is losing charge faster than expected, first allow setup and updates to finish, then check battery usage for an app or weak-signal activity. Try only the settings that fit your phone and needs; if the drain continues, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or support. The timing and menu names vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.
1. Allow setup and updates to settle
A new phone may use more power while it downloads data, restores apps, indexes content, or optimizes software. The expected adjustment period differs by platform: Samsung says Galaxy apps and services may optimize during the first few days, while Google says Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset can take up to a few weeks. Apple notes that ongoing setup or a recent iOS update can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. These are platform-specific descriptions, not a promise that every phone will normalize on a fixed schedule.
If you have just installed an update, let downloads and background activity finish, then check battery usage again. Google notes that battery use can temporarily rise after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Google Pixel Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery
2. Find what is using the battery
Before changing several settings, use your phone’s battery screen to see which apps or system activities account for the drain. Look for unusually high background activity or mobile-network use. A demanding app may be expected to use more power while you actively use it; persistent background use is a different clue.

- iPhone: Open Settings and tap Battery. Apple’s screen can show app and system activity and may identify Background Activity or No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal.
- Pixel: Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery usage. Google provides app and system views.
- Samsung Galaxy: Open the battery settings and inspect detailed app battery usage; the precise path varies by model and software.

3. Check signal conditions and 5G behavior
Weak or unstable mobile reception can contribute to battery drain. If the problem happens mainly in places with poor coverage, or when moving between coverage areas, network conditions may be part of the explanation. Apple identifies low signal and no coverage as battery-use factors and says a strong signal uses less energy than a weak one.

5G behavior is not identical across carriers or devices. Samsung’s US guidance describes a network configuration in which a Galaxy phone maintains a 3G or LTE connection alongside 5G for calls and messages. Samsung says that configuration can increase battery drain and warmth compared with using 3G or LTE alone. On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G speeds do not noticeably improve the experience. This can save battery, but the option and behavior depend on device and software compatibility. Apple also recommends using Wi-Fi when practical. 4. Make targeted, reversible changes
Use the battery-usage screen to guide adjustments rather than restricting every app or changing network settings blindly. Consider the tradeoff: limiting background activity can reduce updates or notifications, while changing network mode may affect speed or availability.
- If one app stands out: Review its background activity and settings. Google recommends keeping app battery optimization on. Samsung offers sleep and deep-sleep options for infrequently used apps; those restrictions can affect background activity and notifications.
- If you have an iPhone: Try Low Power Mode when you need to extend a charge. If your model supports it, consider 5G Auto rather than forcing 5G in every situation.
- If coverage is the likely factor: Use Wi-Fi when available and practical. On a supported iPhone, 5G Auto is another option; other phones may offer different network controls, so follow the instructions for your exact model.
These are options, not mandatory settings. Recheck battery usage after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

5. Update the phone and restart if appropriate
Check for available operating-system and app updates, then restart the phone if troubleshooting guidance for your model recommends it. Updates may resolve software issues, but installing one can also trigger temporary downloads and optimization. Once that activity settles, review battery usage again rather than judging the result immediately.

If the drain remains abnormal after setup and updates have settled and you have checked apps and signal conditions, use diagnostics intended for your device. Do not apply one manufacturer’s test threshold to another phone.

Google Pixel
Google says Battery Diagnostics is available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Its overnight procedure is to charge the phone to 100%, close open apps, unplug it, and leave it idle overnight. In that Pixel procedure, a loss of more than 10% overnight is a reason to review Battery usage. The threshold is Google Pixel guidance, not a general standard for other phones. If repeated troubleshooting does not resolve persistent Pixel drain, Google advises contacting support. Google Pixel Help: Fix battery drain problems
iPhone
On supported devices, open Settings and tap Battery, then check Battery Health. If the status shows Service, follow the onscreen guidance. Apple Support: If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly
Samsung Galaxy and other phones
Follow the local manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model and region. Menu paths, diagnostics, and repair options differ between devices; use the manufacturer’s recommended route if the battery screen and basic troubleshooting do not explain or resolve the drain.
