For Xbox Series X|S, the Storage Expansion Card is the add-on that can run Series X|S optimized games directly and matches the internal SSD’s performance, according to Microsoft. A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD can hold any Xbox game and directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles—but an optimized Series X|S game must be moved to the console’s internal storage or the expansion card before you can play it.

What is the difference between the expansion card and the internal SSD?

The internal SSD is the console’s built-in game storage. The Storage Expansion Card is a separate add-on designed to provide the same performance and direct-play compatibility for Series X|S optimized games. USB storage has a different role: it can store games and play backward-compatible titles, but it cannot directly run Series X|S optimized games.

Microsoft lists custom NVMe internal storage for both consoles, with 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed I/O throughput. These are specifications for the console storage architecture, not measured speeds for a particular game, expansion card, or retail drive. Microsoft describes the expansion card as matching internal SSD performance. In Xbox Wire’s September 24, 2020 storage explainer, Xbox Director of Program Management Jason Ronald said, “The only difference is that the expansion card is designed to match the exact performance of the internal storage of the Xbox Series X|S.” That is Microsoft’s description of the card’s intended performance, not an independent benchmark of a particular model against a USB drive. Which storage can play each kind of Xbox game?

Storage location Store Xbox games Directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games Directly play Series X|S optimized games Performance compared with internal SSD
Internal SSD Yes Yes Yes Reference storage
Xbox Storage Expansion Card Yes Yes Yes Microsoft says it matches internal SSD performance
USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD Yes Yes No Does not match internal SSD performance

The compatibility distinction is the practical one: USB storage can keep an optimized game installed, but you must move or copy that game to the internal SSD or expansion card to play it. Microsoft’s comparison covers the supported storage categories and their game compatibility. Xbox storage comparison Xbox Wire storage explainer

Can you play Series X|S optimized games from an external hard drive?

Not directly from a USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD. You can store an optimized game there, then move or copy it to the internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card before launching it. USB drives remain useful for keeping a larger installed library, archiving titles, and playing backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Microsoft does not establish one universal transfer time or generic USB-drive speed, so those depend on the specific drive and game.

Does Quick Resume work from USB storage?

Yes. Microsoft says Quick Resume works when a game is played from internal storage, the expansion card, or USB 3.1 HDD/SSD storage because the game-state data is persisted on the internal SSD. This does not change the USB compatibility limit: Quick Resume does not let a USB drive directly run a Series X|S optimized game. Xbox Support: Quick Resume

Which option should you choose?

Choose the Storage Expansion Card if you want to play optimized games from added storage

The card is the straightforward add-on when you want Series X|S optimized titles to remain installed and playable without moving them back to the internal SSD. It is also the add-on Microsoft says matches internal storage performance. See the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card product page for listed capacities and compatibility.

Choose USB storage if your priority is library space or backward-compatible games

A USB 3.1 HDD or SSD can store any Xbox game and directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. It makes sense if you are comfortable moving optimized games to supported console storage when you want to play them. Compare capacity and local price before buying; Microsoft’s cited pages do not establish current regional retail prices.

Do not treat an ordinary M.2 SSD as a drop-in expansion card

Microsoft’s guidance identifies the dedicated expansion-card port and supported USB storage. It does not establish a user-installable internal M.2 SSD upgrade for Series X|S, so an ordinary M.2 drive should not be presented as equivalent to the console’s expansion card.
