To have a Steam game ready before a playtest, check its current install and library space, choose a suitable library, move the game or add a library if needed, then queue and schedule updates early enough to finish before the session. Test-launch the game ahead of time: if an update is pending, Steam may start it when you launch, leaving the build unavailable at the start of the playtest.
1. Check where the game is installed and how much space is available
In Steam, open Settings > Storage to review library locations, their drives, and installed games. Check the target game’s displayed storage requirements and the available capacity at the location where you plan to keep it. Steam does not specify a universal free-space buffer; leave reasonable headroom for that game’s updates and installation work.
If another existing library has enough room, you can direct new installations there. If you need another location, use the Storage screen to add a library on a drive compatible with your computer. Steam supports library folders on multiple drives; the available choices depend on the drives and system you have.
Move an installed game without downloading it again
Once the destination library exists, move the game through either of Steam’s documented routes. In the Storage interface, select the source drive, select the game, and choose Move. Alternatively, open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder. Steam’s labels may change as the client is updated.

Steam advises against installing Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. If you need more room, consider a compatible local drive as an alternate library location, and check your computer’s form factor and interface compatibility before choosing one.
2. Stage and prioritize downloads before the session
Open the Downloads page from Steam’s client link or through View > Downloads. The Download Manager shows progress, queue order, and completed updates; you can reorder queued work so the playtest game is ahead of less urgent downloads. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose an update schedule that fits the time available before the playtest. You can also set a bandwidth limit if the connection needs to remain usable for other people or applications. Choose based on how soon the game must be ready and whether downloads could interfere with other network use.
Choose per-game update behavior carefully
Open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Updates to review its automatic update preference. Only update this game when I launch it can defer the update, but it is risky for a scheduled session: Steam Support says launching a game with a pending update can force that update immediately. Apply or check for updates well before playtest time, rather than relying on the first launch at the session. A high-priority option can move the game’s automatic update ahead of others.

3. Estimate whether downloads will finish in time
Check the units before comparing Steam’s rate display with the speed advertised by your internet plan. Steam reports download throughput in bytes per second, while plans are commonly described in bits per second. Steam Support gives the conversion example 768 KB/s = 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second; the difference between bytes and bits can make the same connection appear to have very different numbers.
For a rough estimate, convert the plan speed and Steam’s displayed rate to the same units, then allow for other network activity and local installation work. Completion also depends on the game’s download size and Steam’s available delivery capacity, so a calculated time is an estimate rather than a guarantee.

4. Keep downloads from disrupting the playtest
Steam automatically pauses downloads when a game launches to prioritize the game’s network activity, according to Steam Support. If you need downloads to continue during gameplay, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads. Steam suggests considering a bandwidth limit if downloads affect network performance. When the playtest depends on stable network conditions, finish downloads beforehand.

Slow download
- Check the units: compare bytes per second with bytes per second, or bits per second with bits per second.
- Review the Download Region: set it to your region or try a nearby region if the selected content-server region is slow or overloaded. See Steam’s slow-download guidance.
- Account for other network activity: competing use can affect the rate and the time needed to finish.
Install or update failure
Steam’s Update & Installation Issues guidance includes clearing the download cache, repairing the Library folder, verifying installed files, and trying an alternate drive. Use these as troubleshooting options if the ordinary download and install process fails, rather than as routine preparation for every playtest.
