OpenAI says eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 are automatically placed in ChatGPT for Teens, which is designed to add safeguards and learning-oriented features. Parents can link accounts to manage selected settings and may receive limited safety notifications, but parental controls do not let them read a teenager’s chats or see real-time activity. These protections are not a guarantee that every harmful response will be blocked, and available sources do not establish how often teens encounter harmful ChatGPT output or whether using ChatGPT causes mental-health or developmental effects.

What ChatGPT’s teen protections are intended to do

OpenAI says an account may be treated as under 18 based on age information supplied to the account, verified age, or age prediction. For eligible accounts identified as under 18, the company says ChatGPT for Teens turns on automatically. Its description combines additional care around sensitive content with features intended to support learning and balanced use.

OpenAI lists protections or additional care for topics including graphic violence and gore, risky viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay, depictions of self-harm, and content promoting extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming. Its Under-18 principles also describe additional care around suicide, dangerous activities and substances, and requests to keep unsafe behavior secret. These are descriptions of intended product behavior, not a promise that harmful content will always be prevented. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens overview and its teen-protection policy update explain the stated approach.

Learning features are not proof of educational benefit

OpenAI presents features such as Study mode and break reminders as ways to encourage learning and balanced use, and frames the teen experience as suitable for learning, creativity, and everyday questions. That is the company’s description of the product; it is not an independent finding that these features improve learning or well-being.

What parents can manage—and what they cannot see

A parent or guardian can link accounts and manage selected settings. OpenAI’s help documentation describes options including quiet hours and study hours, along with settings that can affect memory or model training. Parental controls do not provide access to a teen’s conversation history or real-time activity. If OpenAI sends a safety notification in a limited high-risk situation, the company says it provides limited information about the concern and any related account action—not a transcript. See Managing parental controls in ChatGPT for the current controls and notification details.

That distinction matters when setting expectations: linking accounts is not a way to secretly monitor conversations. Tell your teen what the controls can do, decide together which settings to use, and agree on how you will handle concerns. Notification conditions and available settings can change, so check the current help page rather than relying on an older description.

Age prediction can misclassify an account

OpenAI says its age-prediction process may use account-linked signals such as broad topics discussed, times of day, how and when the account is used, and how long the account has existed. The company describes it as an additional safety check and acknowledges that no system is perfect. An adult may therefore be placed into the teen experience by mistake, or an account may not be classified as intended.

OpenAI says some users can review their age category and, where available, verify their age if classified incorrectly. Its account workflows and availability vary by region and may change. The company reported that age prediction began rolling out in the EU on August 25, 2026; check OpenAI’s age-prediction explanation and the Age prediction in ChatGPT help page for current regional instructions.

What is—and is not—known about the risks

OpenAI’s materials identify areas its safeguards are intended to address, and the company describes ongoing work on mental-health-related safety and teen protections. Those first-party descriptions do not establish how frequently teenagers receive harmful responses, how well the safeguards perform in ordinary use, or whether ChatGPT use causes mental-health or developmental effects. The sources available for this article do not provide a sufficiently supported independent estimate of those risks. That absence is not evidence that the risks are zero; it means a rate or causal claim should not be presented as settled.

OpenAI’s update on mental-health-related work and Teen Safety Blueprint describe company efforts and evaluation approaches, rather than independent outcome evidence. Treat product and policy pages as explanations of what OpenAI says it intends to do, not proof that every safeguard works in every conversation.

How to talk with your teenager about ChatGPT

A practical conversation can focus on the teen’s actual use and what they should do if an answer feels upsetting, unsafe, or confusing. Rather than treating settings as a substitute for involvement, agree on expectations that suit the teenager’s age and circumstances.

  • Ask what they use ChatGPT for, including schoolwork, creative projects, advice, or personal questions.
  • Discuss what personal or sensitive information they should not share with an AI service.
  • Agree on what they should do if ChatGPT gives an upsetting or unsafe answer, including when to bring it to a trusted adult.
  • Review linked-account settings together and be clear that they do not let a parent read chat history.
  • Set family technology rules that fit your teenager and revisit them as needs or product settings change.

OpenAI’s parental-controls announcement quotes Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, emphasizing that controls work best alongside conversations, clear family rules, and active involvement. This is practical guidance, not a statistical finding about outcomes.
