You can clone an existing drive to a new NVMe SSD by connecting the new drive, using a cloning tool that supports both drives and your setup, then installing the clone and selecting it as the boot drive. First verify that your computer supports the SSD’s NVMe interface and M.2 size, and back up important files: cloning overwrites the destination drive.
Check compatibility before you buy or connect the SSD
“M.2” describes a form factor, not a guarantee that a slot supports NVMe. Check the computer or motherboard’s exact model and storage manual for NVMe over PCIe support, the permitted M.2 drive length, slot key and interface, and any physical or thermal constraints. Samsung’s Internal SSD Installation FAQ notes that its NVMe drives use an M-Key and advises checking the system documentation or provider for slot compatibility.
Choose a destination with enough capacity for the data and partitions the cloning utility will copy. Capacity rules vary by tool: Samsung Data Migration requires the source disk to be smaller than the target. A larger destination does not necessarily mean all of its space will be usable immediately; check the tool’s partition-resizing options and the resulting layout.
Back up and check whether your setup is supported
Make a separate backup of important files and confirm you can open it. Samsung’s Data Migration manual warns that cloning erases all data on the target and that the software cannot recover it. Its manual says the source is not affected if a cloning attempt fails, but that should not be treated as protection against an unrelated drive or system failure. Copy anything you need from the new SSD before using it as the target.

Use a cloning utility that explicitly supports your source and destination drives, operating system, and connection method. Manufacturer utilities are not universal: Samsung Data Migration is limited to supported Windows versions and the Samsung SSD models listed in its manual. The manual supports MBR and GPT but identifies configurations that may not work properly, including encrypted or damaged sources, dynamic disks, and systems with multiple installed operating systems. Those are limitations documented for Samsung’s tool, not rules that necessarily apply to every cloning program. Crucial’s NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD Install Guide describes the cloning utility provided with Crucial SSDs.
Samsung’s manual also says OEM recovery partitions generally are not cloned, with an exception for certain Samsung recovery setups. Check the utility’s current guidance and inspect the partition map after cloning if recovery partitions matter to you.

Connect the new NVMe SSD
Use a second internal slot
If your computer has a compatible spare M.2 slot, connect the new SSD there by following the system maker’s service instructions. Verify that the specific slot supports NVMe and the new drive’s length before installing it.
Use a USB NVMe enclosure
If there is no spare internal slot, a compatible USB NVMe enclosure can connect the destination externally. An enclosure solves the physical connection problem only; it does not guarantee that your cloning software supports a USB-connected target or that it works with that enclosure’s chipset. Samsung notes that a converter may be needed. Plugable’s enclosure cloning guide, last updated February 26, 2026, lists compatibility examples specific to its enclosure and the tools it discusses. Check the software and enclosure documentation for your exact combination.

- ENCLOSURE ONLY, SSD NOT INCLUDED: This is the case you put your own M.2 SSD into, not a drive with storage inside. 100% tool-free, so the SSD installs and comes out in seconds with no screwdriver.
- FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
- 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
- SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
- IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.
Clone the existing drive to the new SSD
- Install the supported cloning utility. Download it from the SSD manufacturer or software publisher, and confirm its supported Windows version or other operating system, eligible target SSDs, source-drive restrictions, and support for your connection method.
- Identify both drives by model and capacity. Select the existing drive as the source and the new NVMe SSD as the destination. Do not rely on a drive letter alone. Before proceeding, verify that the destination is the new SSD and that you have saved anything on it elsewhere.
- Review the partition layout and resize settings. Use the utility’s controls if you need to fit partitions onto a smaller drive or make use of additional capacity on a larger one. Crucial’s guide describes an automatic clone mode and notes that a larger SSD can initially show only the source drive’s size if space or partition settings need adjustment.
- Read the final confirmation and start the clone. Proceed only after confirming that the target will be erased and that the displayed source and destination are correct. No universal completion time is established by the cited manufacturer guides; duration depends on data volume, source condition, interface, and software.
- Wait for completion before disconnecting or moving drives. Follow the utility’s instructions, then shut the computer down before physically replacing or moving a drive.
Install the clone and make it the boot drive
Follow the computer maker’s service instructions to remove or move the old drive and install the new SSD. Samsung’s How to upgrade SSD guide illustrates locating the slot, removing its screw, inserting the SSD, and securing it; your system’s procedure may differ.
If the old drive remains installed, check the computer’s firmware boot options and select the boot entry for the new SSD if needed. Menu names vary by model. A successful operating-system startup alone does not prove the computer booted from the clone, so identify the active boot drive before treating the migration as complete.

- 【Supported SSD】FIDECO NVMe enclosure can support M.2 NVMe SSD with M & M+B Key. The supported M.2 SSD sizes are 2230/2242/2260/2280. Just one M.2 enclosure can meet your needs of using different sizes of NVMe SSDs. Please not that it cannot support any M.2 SATA SSD.
- 【Super Fast Transfer Speed】FIDECO NVMe SSD enclosure adopts USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard and can support UASP, so the maximum speed can reach 10Gbps in theory. You do not need to wait for the data transfer any longer, and it can definitely save much time for you.
- 【Sandwich Design】FIDECO M.2 enclosure features sandwich-style design, which makes it easy for you to install different SSDs with no tools at all. Also, the sandwich design can make the thermal pad have a better contact with the M.2 NVMe enclosure, so the SSD itself can run in a much cooler operating environment.
- 【Portable Size】FIDECO M.2 NVMe to USB adapter features mini and pocket design, and it is equipped with a USB C to USB C cable with an attached USB A adapter. So, you can bring only one USB cable during travel.
- 【Compatible System】FIDECO M.2 to USB adapter is widely compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Therefore, whether you are Windows or Apple users, the NVMe SSD reader can make it.
Verify the result before reusing the old drive
- Confirm the operating system starts from the new SSD and that important files and applications work.
- Check the new drive’s reported capacity and inspect its partitions. If space is unallocated, use a suitable disk-management workflow to extend or adjust partitions; first confirm which partition can safely be changed.
- Keep the old drive unchanged until the new system has booted successfully and you have verified your backup. Do not erase or repurpose it prematurely.
Pay particular attention to older MBR layouts: Samsung’s Data Migration manual warns that cloning an MBR source to a drive larger than 2 TB may leave capacity beyond 2 TB unallocated. The result depends on the layout and tool, so inspect the destination rather than assuming all capacity was added to a partition.
