Radar is generally less dependent on visible light than a camera, so it can have an advantage in darkness or when visual contrast is poor. But radar is not weatherproof: heavy rain, snow, road spray, or a covered sensor can also limit it. Whether an ADAS feature remains available depends on the vehicle, sensor placement, software, feature, and conditions.

What cameras and radar contribute to ADAS

Cameras rely on a clear visual scene

A camera records visible light, allowing driver-assistance software to interpret visual details such as lane markings and objects. Its view can be compromised by darkness, glare, moisture, dirt, or anything covering the windshield area in front of it. Hyundai’s 2025 US owner manual lists heavy rain, snow, and thick fog among conditions in which Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate properly, and also describes limits involving glare and low light. Hyundai’s 2025 US owner manual.

Radar does not depend on visible light in the same way

Radar uses radio waves rather than a visible-light image. That makes it less dependent on illumination and can give it a relative advantage when it is dark or the scene has poor visual contrast. It does not mean radar can reliably see through every kind of precipitation or obstruction: heavy rain or snow, road spray, and dirt, ice, or snow on the sensor can interfere with radar-based features. NHTSA-hosted Honda owner-manual excerpt.

How conditions affect cameras and radar

Condition Camera considerations Radar considerations Practical caveat
Darkness or low illumination Less available light can make the visual scene harder to interpret. Radar is less dependent on visible light. This is a relative advantage, not a guarantee that a particular ADAS feature will operate.
Glare or weak visual contrast Glare and poor contrast can make visual details harder to distinguish. Radar does not rely on the same visible-light image. Performance depends on the feature and vehicle; do not infer that radar replaces every camera task.
Heavy rain, snow, or thick fog Precipitation or fog can obscure the scene; Hyundai lists these as limitations for its 2025 US Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Heavy rain or snow may interfere with radar signals, according to the NHTSA-hosted Honda manual excerpt. Ford’s manual also identifies heavy rain, spray, snow, or fog as possible radar interference. Both sensor types can be affected. The cited manuals describe vehicle-specific limitations, not a universal ranking.
Road spray or swirling snow Spray or snow can reduce the camera’s usable view. Spray or snow kicked up from the roadway can interfere with radar, as described in the Honda manual excerpt. A clear-looking sensor cover does not ensure the feature has an unobstructed or reliable view of the road.
Dirt, ice, snow, or rain covering a sensor area Material on the windshield camera area can limit the camera-based feature. Material on a radar cover or sensor can limit radar-based operation. Follow the cleaning and warning instructions in the manual for the specific vehicle.

These examples are not a head-to-head performance test. NHTSA’s 2024 NCAP Final Decision Notice summarizes stakeholder comments proposing testing in rain, fog, snow, smoke, and other reduced-visibility conditions; those comments are not NHTSA findings that one sensor type performs better. The notice also records concerns that heavy rain and snow can reduce automatic emergency braking (AEB) performance through reduced tire traction. NHTSA’s 2024 NCAP Final Decision Notice.

Does using both sensors solve the problem?

Some vehicles combine information from more than one sensor. That can provide additional information to an ADAS feature, but it does not guarantee that the feature will remain available in poor weather. Hyundai warns that blockage of the camera or radar can temporarily limit or disable Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Different features also depend on different sensor inputs: a camera-based lane function and a radar-assisted following or collision-warning function are not interchangeable just because a vehicle has both sensor types.

A review titled Safe Autonomous Driving in Adverse Weather: Sensor Evaluation and Performance Monitoring examines sensor signals in rain and fog as well as day and night, reinforcing that performance needs to be evaluated by conditions rather than summarized with a universal camera-versus-radar winner. What to do when the vehicle reports a blocked sensor

  1. Take the warning seriously. Check the message and the affected feature in the owner manual. Depending on the vehicle, the system may be limited or temporarily unavailable.
  2. Stop somewhere safe before inspecting or cleaning. Do not attempt to wipe a sensor while driving or in an unsafe roadside location.
  3. Clean only as the manual directs. Hyundai’s manual specifies wiping the windshield camera area and radar cover with a soft cloth. Use the instructions for your own vehicle; do not assume every sensor cover or camera area should be treated the same way. Hyundai manual cleaning instructions.
  4. Follow the manual if the warning persists. A warning that remains after permitted cleaning, or a feature that continues to be unavailable, may require service. Hyundai and Ford manuals describe system limitations and blocked-sensor conditions; consult the relevant vehicle manual for the appropriate next step. Ford owner manual.

Why the driver still matters in bad weather

A sensor’s ability to detect an object is only one part of safe driving. Severe weather can also reduce your own visibility, make the road slippery, and affect how much grip the tires have. NHTSA’s notice summarizes concerns about traction limits in heavy rain and snow, which matter to braking even when a warning system detects a hazard. Do not use ADAS as a reason to drive faster, follow more closely, or continue at an unsafe speed. Adjust driving to visibility and road conditions, and remain prepared to steer and brake.

There is no verified general performance figure establishing a universal camera-versus-radar winner in poor visibility. The manuals cited here give qualitative, vehicle-specific limits; the exact behavior varies by make, model, year, market, sensor placement, software, and ADAS feature.
