Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a USB-C touchscreen to work over one cable, the computer or phone, the display, and the cable must all support the required video, USB data, and power functions. USB-C describes the connector—not a guarantee of video output, touch support, or sufficient power.
What a reliable USB-C touchscreen connection needs
A USB-C connection can carry three separate things. Verify each one for your specific host, display, and cable:
- Video: The host must output video over USB-C using a mode the display accepts, commonly DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) or Thunderbolt. A USB-C port limited to data or charging will not necessarily produce a picture. Dell explains this limitation for its listed portable monitors in its USB-C video-out guidance.
- Touch data: Touch input travels as USB data. If an adapter or cable carries video and power but not USB data, the picture may work while touch does not.
- Power: The host must supply enough power for the display, or the display must support a suitable external power supply. Requirements vary by model.
For example, Elo identifies its 1004LS, 1304LS, and 1504LS touchmonitors as using one USB-C connection for power, video, and touch. Elo says that setup requires DP Alt Mode video, USB data, and Power Delivery; see its technical support guidance. Those requirements describe the cited Elo models, not every USB-C touchscreen.
Check compatibility before connecting or buying
Confirm the host can output video
Look up the exact computer or mobile-device model and confirm that the specific USB-C port supports display output. Charging support or a USB-C-shaped port alone is not enough. Microsoft likewise advises checking alternate-mode support across the computer or phone, display, and cable, and accounting for hubs or adapters in its external-display connection guidance.

Some displays use another method. ASUS distinguishes DP Alt Mode from its DisplayLink approach, so check the display and host specifications rather than assuming all USB-C monitor connections work the same way. See ASUS’s USB-C display guidance.
Check how the display handles touch
Read the display manual to see whether touch data travels over the same USB-C cable as video or needs a separate USB connection. A video-only adapter, or a cable without the required USB data conductors, can leave touch unavailable even when the image appears normally.

Verify the display’s power requirement
Compare the display’s stated power requirement with the output available from the host port. The figures below are examples for specific products, not general requirements:
| Display or guidance | Power detail | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Plugable USBC-PDMON | Plugable specifies 15 W. Its support page, updated August 18, 2026, says the host USB-C port must provide at least that amount for host-powered operation. | If the host cannot supply 15 W, Plugable recommends an external USB PD supply rated at 15 W or higher connected to the monitor’s power input. See Plugable’s power guidance. |
| LG gram +view connection guidance | LG gives a minimum host output of 7.5 W (5 V / 1.5 A) for the referenced connection; the support page does not state a publication year. | Apply this figure only to the cited gram +view guidance, not to other displays. See LG’s USB-C connection support page. |
Choose a cable for all required functions
Use the display’s supplied cable when available, or select one explicitly rated for the video mode, USB data, and power your setup needs. “USB-C” by itself does not establish those capabilities. For a single-cable Elo setup, the cable must carry DP Alt Mode video, USB data, and Power Delivery according to Elo’s technical support guidance.

Troubleshoot the connection one path at a time
- Check the host port. Confirm that the exact port supports video output in a mode the display accepts. If the host lacks a compatible video mode, external power will not add video capability.
- Check the monitor manual. Identify its supported inputs, power requirement, and whether touch uses the same cable or a separate USB connection.
- Try a known-capable cable. Use the supplied cable or one rated for the needed video, USB data, and power. If video works but touch does not, inspect the USB data path first.
- Connect directly to the host. Test without a hub or dongle to remove those components as variables. Microsoft includes adapters and hubs among the factors to check when diagnosing external-display connections.
- If the display is blank, isolate video compatibility. Verify video-mode support on the host, cable, and display. A USB-C-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable is not automatically a substitute for a monitor’s supported USB-C connection; wiring and supported paths vary by model.
- If the display flickers, resets, or shuts off, check power. Compare the host’s output with the display’s stated requirement. If the display accepts external power, use a supply that meets the manufacturer’s specification.
- If you connect through HDMI, verify each path separately. HDMI may carry video, but do not assume it also provides touchscreen data or monitor power. Follow the display manual for any additional USB or power connections.
