In Windows 11, set touchscreen gestures under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch, and adjust the size of text and apps under Settings > System > Display > Scale & layout. Keep display resolution at the value marked Recommended unless you have a specific reason to change it: scaling makes interface elements larger without lowering the display’s pixel resolution.
Configure touchscreen gestures in Windows 11
These controls are for a touchscreen, not a touchpad. To enable the available multi-finger touchscreen gestures:
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open Bluetooth & devices > Touch.
- Turn on Three and four-finger touch gestures.
- To configure edge swipes separately, expand Touch screen edge gestures and enable the left-edge or right-edge options you want.
Windows lists these touchscreen actions:
- Tap to select an item.
- Slide two fingers to scroll.
- Pinch or stretch to zoom in or out.
- Press and hold for more commands.
- Swipe up with three fingers to show open windows; swipe down to show the desktop; swipe sideways to switch apps.
- Swipe sideways with four fingers to switch desktops.
- With the corresponding edge gestures enabled, swipe in from the right edge to open Notification Center or from the left edge to show widgets.
Microsoft notes that enabling three- and four-finger touchscreen gestures can prevent some apps from receiving those same interactions as app-specific gestures. If an app’s multi-finger gesture stops working, turn off the Windows multi-finger option and check whether the app’s gesture returns. Make text and apps larger without changing resolution
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one display is connected, select the display you want to adjust.
- Under Scale & layout, open Scale and choose an option. Microsoft identifies the option marked Recommended as typically best.
Scale changes the size of text, apps, and other interface elements while retaining the display’s resolution. This is usually the right first adjustment on a small screen when menus or controls feel too small.

If only text needs to be larger
Use Windows accessibility’s Make text bigger control instead of lowering resolution. Find it in Settings > Accessibility > Text size, adjust the text-size slider, then select Apply. This is a targeted alternative when the overall size of apps and interface elements is already comfortable. See Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for making Windows easier to see.
Keep display resolution at Recommended
Resolution and scale do different jobs. Resolution determines how many pixels the display uses; scale determines how large interface elements appear. In Settings > System > Display, leave Display resolution at the value marked Recommended for ordinary use.

Microsoft warns that a resolution lower than the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp. Depending on the display, the picture may also appear small and centered, have black borders, or look stretched. If resolution changes unexpectedly, Microsoft advises checking for graphics driver updates through Windows Update. Windows 11 switches touch-friendly behavior automatically
Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode switch. Microsoft Support states, “Windows 11 doesn’t have an option to manually turn tablet mode on or off.” Touch-friendly behavior adjusts automatically on supported devices according to factors such as whether a keyboard is connected or the device has been converted to tablet form. Configure touchscreen gestures in the Touch settings above rather than looking for a tablet-mode toggle. See Microsoft’s tablet-mode guidance.

Windows 10 has different gesture controls and is out of support
Windows 10’s gesture controls and menu locations differ from Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance describes standard two-finger gestures and one-finger edge actions; do not assume the Windows 11 three- and four-finger touchscreen controls are available in the same place. Touchpad gestures are a separate category, with their own controls and device requirements.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows display and support information. A device that remains on Windows 10 no longer receives standard security updates from Microsoft through regular support, so consider that security context when deciding whether to keep using it.
