What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To install a 4TB M.2 NVMe SSD, first confirm that your motherboard’s M.2 slot supports NVMe/PCIe, fits the drive’s physical length, and supports its capacity. Then shut down and unplug the PC, seat the SSD gently in the slot, secure it at the correct standoff, and check for it in BIOS/UEFI. A new secondary drive may also need initialization and formatting in your operating system before you can store files on it.
Check that the SSD is compatible with your motherboard
Do not assume that an M.2 slot supports every M.2 drive. M.2 describes a form factor and connector family; the slot must also support the drive’s protocol. For this installation, check that the motherboard slot supports PCIe/NVMe, the SSD’s physical length, and a 4TB capacity. Consult the exact motherboard manual and system specifications before buying or installing. Kingston explains the distinction between M.2 size and protocol in its SSD form factors and interfaces FAQ.
- Protocol: Confirm the slot supports PCIe/NVMe, not only SATA M.2 drives.
- Length: Match the drive’s size to a supported mounting position. Common module lengths include 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110.
- Capacity and configuration: Check that the board supports the drive capacity and review any slot-specific instructions.
- Shared resources: Some M.2 sockets share PCIe lanes or SATA ports with other devices. The manual may explain which connectors or slots are affected.
For example, Kingston’s NV3 datasheet lists a 4TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe option. That is an example of a drive that exists, not a guarantee that it will work in a particular PC. Check the current model specifications and your motherboard documentation: Kingston NV3 datasheet.
Prepare the PC before opening the case
- Back up important files. If the SSD already contains data, do not initialize or format it unless you intend to erase that data.
- Have the case and motherboard manuals available. They show how to open the case, locate the correct M.2 slot, handle its heatsink, and use the proper standoff.
- Use the correct screwdriver and work in a clear area. Ground yourself before handling components, and hold the SSD by its edges rather than touching its contacts.
Install the M.2 NVMe SSD
- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the PC completely and unplug its power cable. Follow the computer maker’s service instructions before opening the case.
- Open the case and locate a compatible slot. Remove the side panel as directed in the case manual. Use the motherboard manual to identify an M.2 slot that supports PCIe/NVMe and the SSD’s length. Check for a motherboard heatsink covering the slot.
- Remove the heatsink if required. Follow the board manual for removing and refitting it, including any instructions for the thermal pad. Do not assume every board uses the same heatsink arrangement or that an aftermarket heatsink is required.
- Insert the SSD. Align its keyed connector with the socket and hold the drive by its sides. Insert it at the angle specified by the board or drive instructions. It should slide into place without force; stop if it does not align. Kingston’s M.2 SSD installation guide also advises careful handling and warns against overtightening the retaining screw.
- Secure it. Lower the SSD onto the standoff at the position matching its length, then fit the correct retaining screw. Tighten it only enough to secure the drive. Reinstall the motherboard heatsink if the manual specifies one.
- Reassemble the PC. Replace the case panel, reconnect power, and start the computer.
Confirm that the drive is detected
Check BIOS/UEFI to see whether the SSD is recognized. The exact menu names and location vary by motherboard. If it is missing, shut down and disconnect the PC again before checking that the drive is fully seated and secured. Confirm that you used a slot compatible with NVMe and review the motherboard’s slot configuration and support guidance. Kingston’s SSD support page provides product support context; for board-specific detection or firmware guidance, use your motherboard or system manufacturer’s support materials.

Make the SSD usable in your operating system
If this is a new secondary storage drive, seeing it in BIOS/UEFI does not necessarily mean it is ready to use. Your operating system may require you to initialize the disk, create a partition, and format it. The exact steps and labels depend on the operating system and version, so follow its current disk-management instructions and verify the selected disk by its identity and capacity before making changes. Initialization or formatting can destroy existing data.

Installing the SSD physically is separate from moving an operating system or making the SSD the boot drive. Cloning steps depend on your existing setup. Kingston says the simplest way to ensure a new SSD is selected as the boot drive during installation is to have it be the only storage device connected; if that is not possible, select the SSD as the boot device in BIOS after cloning. See Kingston’s SSD support information and your motherboard’s boot-menu guidance.
