Morocco’s coal-fired power stations depend on coal imported by sea. The latest country-of-origin breakdown available here is for 2024: the United States was the largest reported source, followed by South Africa, Kazakhstan, Colombia and Indonesia. At Jorf Lasfar, ships deliver coal to a purpose-built port beside the generating station, where dedicated facilities handle it. The national import figures do not show which country’s coal went to which plant.
Where Morocco’s imported coal came from in 2024
World Bank WITS, using UN Comtrade data, reports that Morocco imported 9,317,330,000 kilograms of coal and related solid fuels under HS 2701 in 2024. Its reported partner-country breakdown was:

The classification matters: HS 2701 covers coal, briquettes, ovoids and similar solid fuels manufactured from coal. It is not limited to thermal coal, and the nationwide import total does not establish that every shipment was burned to generate electricity. Nor does a declared country of origin identify the mine, trader, shipper or receiving power station for a particular cargo. World Bank WITS’ 2024 Morocco import table is the basis for the figures.
How coal reaches Jorf Lasfar
Jorf Lasfar, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, has a coal-fired power station beside the Port of Jorf Lasfar. TAQA Morocco’s reporting describes a coal-unloading pier and dedicated coal-handling facilities. Its later filing says deliveries arrive by ship at a neighbouring purpose-built port and are handled at the plant. The documented route is therefore maritime: ship delivery, port unloading and transfer through the station’s coal facilities. On-site coal reserves
In that 1 May 2026 filing, TAQA reported about 35 days of coal reserves at the site without further deliveries. This is the operator’s snapshot at the time of the filing, not a fixed reserve requirement or a claim about current inventory.
How important coal is to Morocco’s electricity
Coal supplied 64 percent of Morocco’s electricity production in 2023, according to ANRE, as reported in the U.S. International Trade Administration’s Morocco energy guide. That is a 2023 generation share—not a 2024 import statistic or a current-year estimate. It helps explain why imported coal is significant to the power system, but it measures electricity production rather than the composition of imports. Who buys the power—and what import data cannot show
TAQA Morocco says the Jorf Lasfar station sells its electricity to ONEE, Morocco’s state utility, under power-purchase agreements. That identifies the electricity buyer, not the companies that purchase, trade or ship its coal. The available national trade table also does not connect a particular country’s imports to Jorf Lasfar, another plant, or any individual generating unit.
For a newer country-by-country picture, Morocco’s Office des Changes describes its official foreign-trade database as queryable and updated quarterly. The latest comparable origin table cited here is for 2024; no 2025 breakdown is established here.
