Telescopes can help astronomers infer which gases and aerosols may be in an exoplanet’s atmosphere, and measure clues about its temperature and structure. They do this by analyzing light—not by visiting the planet or directly collecting a sample. What the observations can establish depends on how the planet and its star are observed, and some results admit more than one explanation.
How telescope observations reveal an atmosphere
A telescope records light from a star-and-planet system. Astronomers compare that light across wavelengths and, in some cases, at different points in the planet’s orbit. They then interpret the measured patterns using models of how atmospheric gases, clouds, haze, and heat affect light. The instrument measures the signal; the atmospheric properties are inferred from it.
Not every planet can be studied in the same way. A useful observation depends on factors such as the planet’s orbit, its brightness relative to its star, the target’s properties, and the instrument’s capabilities.
What transit spectroscopy can show
When a planet crosses in front of its star, some starlight passes through the atmosphere around the planet’s edge, or limb. Astronomers compare the starlight received during the transit with light measured outside it. Atmospheric gases can absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns that researchers can compare with molecular absorption signatures. This method is called transmission spectroscopy. NASA explains the technique and Webb’s atmospheric studies in its Webb exoplanet research overview and its exoplanet observing explainer.

A spectral pattern can provide evidence that a gas may be present; it is not a photograph of molecules, and a feature does not always have only one possible interpretation. Clouds and haze can change or weaken the pattern, making it harder to infer what lies deeper in the atmosphere.
What thermal observations add
Planets emit heat, including infrared light. Observing this thermal emission—including how it changes as a planet moves around its star—can help constrain atmospheric temperature and structure. Measurements at different orbital phases can reveal temperature differences across a planet, information that a transit spectrum alone does not provide. NASA describes thermal emission and temperature mapping in its Webb observing explainer and its overview of Webb observations of potentially habitable exoplanets.

What observations have found—and what a flat spectrum means
Webb observations have provided evidence about specific exoplanet atmospheres and processes. NASA reports sulfur dioxide associated with photochemistry, as well as evidence for clouds rich in crystalline silica on the hot gas giant WASP-17 b. The silica result is described in NASA’s report on quartz crystals in WASP-17 b’s clouds. These are findings about particular targets and observations, not a description that applies to every exoplanet.
An unremarkable or featureless transmission spectrum does not, by itself, settle whether a planet has an atmosphere. For a nearby Earth-sized exoplanet, a NASA technical report says a featureless spectrum is consistent with several possibilities: a high-altitude cloud deck, a tenuous atmosphere, or no appreciable atmosphere. These are alternative interpretations, not three independently confirmed states. See the NASA Technical Reports Server record.

Why atmospheric clues do not prove habitability or life
Atmospheric observations are indirect. Clouds and haze can mute spectral features, and variation in a host star can complicate interpretation. A detected feature is evidence to assess in context; by itself, it does not establish surface conditions, habitability, or biology.
Searching for biosignatures on small, potentially habitable transiting planets is particularly challenging. NASA notes that such measurements depend on favorable observing conditions, can require substantial observation time because the signals are small, and must account for possible contamination from the host star. An apparent biosignature therefore remains a hypothesis to evaluate against other evidence, not standalone proof of life. NASA discusses these challenges in its 2024 overview of Webb reconnaissance of potentially habitable worlds.
