Scientists study distant planets by measuring how they affect light from stars and by collecting the faint light some planets emit themselves. A recurring dip in a star’s brightness, a subtle shift in its spectrum, a brief brightening of a background star, or a faint point beside a bright star can all reveal a planet. These are remote measurements—not spacecraft visits—and each method provides different clues about a planet’s orbit, mass, size, or atmosphere.

How do scientists discover worlds around other stars?

Most exoplanets are too far away and too faint to appear as detailed pictures. Astronomers instead monitor light from stars and planetary systems for patterns that a planet’s presence can cause. The host star is part of the evidence: its brightness or motion can reveal an orbiting planet even when the planet itself cannot be seen.

Different techniques detect different signals. A transit is a dip in starlight; radial velocity is a shift in the star’s wavelengths as it moves; microlensing is a temporary increase in background starlight; direct imaging attempts to isolate light from the planet. Combining methods can strengthen what scientists infer about a planet.

What each planet-finding method measures

Method Signal measured What it can reveal Main limitation
Transit photometry A repeating dip in the star’s brightness Planetary crossings and orbital period; paired with spectroscopy, atmospheric clues The planet must pass in front of its star from our viewpoint
Radial velocity Shifts in the star’s light wavelengths as it moves toward and away from us The star’s motion under the planet’s gravitational influence; information that can contribute to mass estimates It is an indirect measurement of stellar motion, not a view of the planet
Gravitational microlensing A temporary magnification of a background star, with a possible additional signal from a planet Evidence for a planet orbiting the foreground star The useful signal comes during a brief alignment event
Direct imaging Light separated from the host star’s glare The planet’s own light, which can be studied further The star is much brighter; images do not generally show surface detail

NASA explains these detection approaches in its overview of how scientists find and characterize exoplanets and its in-depth explanation of exoplanet facts.

Transit photometry: watching for a small stellar dimming

A transit occurs when a planet crosses the face of its star from our line of sight. The planet blocks a small fraction of the star’s light, producing a dip that a telescope can measure. Repeated dips help establish the planet’s orbital period. NASA notes that astronomers can use the period and the star’s mass to calculate the size of the orbit.

Geometry determines whether this method works: a planet that does not cross its star from our viewpoint will not produce a transit signal for us. When a transit does occur, it can also provide a way to study the planet’s atmosphere.

Radial velocity: detecting the star’s wobble

A planet’s gravity pulls on its star, causing the star to move slightly toward and away from Earth as the two bodies orbit. The motion shifts the wavelengths of the star’s light: they are compressed as the star approaches and stretched as it recedes. Astronomers track these changes to infer the star’s radial velocity and the planet’s gravitational influence.

Radial velocity can complement a transit discovery with information about mass. It remains evidence from the star’s movement, rather than a photograph or direct observation of the planet’s surface.

Gravitational microlensing: catching a brief magnification

When a foreground star passes in front of a more distant background star, the foreground star’s gravity can magnify the background star’s light. A planet orbiting the foreground star may add a smaller signal to the event. Ground-based telescopes use this technique to find planets without seeing them directly.

Direct imaging: separating planet light from starlight

A star can outshine a nearby planet, making the planet difficult to distinguish. Direct imaging seeks the planet’s own light; a coronagraph can block the star’s light, and image processing can subtract the star’s known appearance. NASA reports that exoplanets directly imaged so far have mainly been giant planets that remain hot from their formation.

A direct image is not necessarily a close-up. Individual pixels do not reveal surface features, although the planet’s light can support atmospheric studies.

How spectroscopy turns light into atmospheric clues

A spectrograph spreads incoming light across wavelengths. Atoms and molecules leave characteristic features in a spectrum, which scientists compare with known signatures to infer which substances may be present. The result is a chemical clue encoded in light—not a sample collected from the planet.

During a transit, some starlight passes through the planet’s atmosphere before reaching a telescope. Comparing that light across wavelengths can reveal clues about atmospheric constituents. NASA describes this approach as transmission spectroscopy and compares spectral patterns to a barcode. Its explanation of how Webb studies exoplanets describes the telescope’s use of spectrographs and imaging modes.

What JWST adds to exoplanet studies

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) uses spectrographs and imaging modes to study exoplanets. Transmission spectroscopy can probe atmospheric composition, while direct imaging can capture planet light. By observing a planet at different times, astronomers can also build a map of atmospheric temperature as a function of longitude.

These observations characterize particular properties; a spectrum or atmospheric measurement alone does not establish that a planet is habitable or that life is present.

What remote observations can—and cannot—tell us

Taken together, these methods can provide evidence about a planet’s size, mass, orbit, and atmospheric composition. They do not amount to visiting the planet, and for most worlds they do not provide surface detail. The strength of the conclusion depends on what signal was measured and which method produced it.

NASA’s exoplanet overview reports a statistical estimate based on Kepler data that the Milky Way contains more planets than stars—more than a trillion planets. This is an estimate, not a direct census of every planet in the galaxy. NASA also quotes exoplanet researcher Sara Seager: “Right now we know, for the first time, that small planets are very common,” she said. “It’s phenomenal. We had no way to know that before Kepler. We’ll just say, colloquially: They’re everywhere.”
