Choose Cities: Skylines for its established Steam Workshop ecosystem, broad catalog of accumulated add-ons, and lighter published PC requirements. Choose Cities: Skylines II if you want newer simulation systems, a larger map, seasons, and current PC content—and your computer meets its demanding requirements. The sequel is not yet ready for consoles, with no firm release date announced on Paradox’s current status page.
How the two games differ
Both games are city-building simulations, but they offer different reasons to play. The original’s Steam listing describes a mature city simulation built around traffic, services, districts, policies, and a day-and-night cycle. Cities: Skylines II adds publisher-described systems including more flexible road tools, updated traffic AI, citizen lifepaths, an expanded economy, progression, climate, and seasons. Paradox said at the sequel’s 2023 launch that its map is five times larger than the original’s. These are published feature descriptions, not independent tests of which game is more enjoyable or performs better.
For an overview of the sequel’s stated features, see Paradox’s Cities: Skylines II page and its October 24, 2023 PC launch announcement. The original’s features and platform details appear on its Steam listing.
Which one is better for mods?
Pick the original for Steam Workshop
Cities: Skylines has an established Steam Workshop route. Its Steam page describes importing, sharing, and downloading community creations, alongside a substantial catalog of expansions and creator packs. If browsing a familiar Workshop library and choosing from accumulated add-ons are priorities, the original is the more straightforward fit. The catalog changes, so check the current Steam listing for available content.

Pick the sequel for its integrated Paradox Mods route
Cities: Skylines II uses Paradox Mods. Paradox describes its modding beta as initially supporting map and code mods, with asset mods planned for future updates; the in-game experience is intended to work regardless of platform. That does not establish that the sequel has a Workshop-sized catalog or that the two libraries offer equivalent content. See the current Paradox Mods information for its scope and status.
Can your PC run Cities: Skylines II?
Check the specifications for your own computer before choosing the sequel. Steam’s Windows recommended requirements, as listed on the store page accessed October 7, 2026, are 16 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with 10 GB of memory or an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT with 16 GB, and 60 GB of storage. Recommended specifications are not a promise of a particular frame rate. Paradox describes the game as performance-heavy and provides a guide to adjusting settings; consult its performance optimization guide, updated August 4, 2026, if you need to tune it.

The original has substantially lower published minimum graphics and storage requirements on its Steam page. That makes it the more practical option if your PC is older or below the sequel’s recommended tier, though published requirements alone cannot predict how either game will run on a particular setup. Steam lists requirements for Cities: Skylines across Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux; the sequel’s cited recommended specifications are for Windows PC. Compare the listings for your operating system before buying: original game and sequel.
What about platforms and current content?
Console players should check the sequel’s status first
In the official console-status information consulted October 7, 2026, Paradox said the console version still needed performance and stability work and gave no firm release date. Its wording about not releasing “before summer” does not specify a year, so it should not be read as a dated launch promise. Console-first players should check the latest Cities: Skylines II console news rather than assume the PC version’s availability extends to consoles.
