To improve at parrying, dodging, and counterattacking, read the enemy’s attack before pressing a button: identify its cue, defend against the full sequence, then punish only when the enemy is truly open. Soulslike games do not share one universal timing window or defensive rhythm. The right input—and the cost of getting it wrong—depends on the game, the move, and the enemy.
Why panic inputs make defense harder
When an attack is coming, repeated dodges or premature swings can turn a readable move into a hit. Bandai Namco’s ELDEN RING How-To Guide Part 4 — Combat Guide explains that actions commit and inputs can queue. If you press dodge several times, a later roll may begin after the first one, carrying you into a follow-up or leaving you in recovery when the next hit lands.
Instead, make one deliberate choice, then watch what the enemy does. Notice the windup, the attack’s reach, whether it is one hit or a string, and when the sequence ends. Bandai Namco’s guide puts it simply: “Patience is key in ELDEN RING.” That is useful advice, not a universal timing formula: the cue and response still have to be learned for each move.
Choose a defense for the attack you see
Dodging, blocking, parrying, and counterattacking serve different purposes. Before choosing, consider the move’s timing and eligibility, what happens if you miss, whether the defense avoids or mitigates damage, and whether the enemy can follow up before you recover.

Dodging: avoid the hit, then stop rolling
Bandai Namco describes dodging as Elden Ring’s main survival tool: a well-timed dodge can use invulnerability frames to avoid damage. The guide gives no frame count, so there is no source-backed number to memorize. Timing also depends on the particular move and the game’s controls and conditions.
Rolling too early can leave you recovering when the attack arrives. Rolling repeatedly can spend stamina and put you in the path of a follow-up. Try one measured dodge in response to the attack, then wait to see whether the enemy continues. Do not assume one direction works for every move.

Elden Ring’s guide also notes that a backstep from a standstill has only minor invulnerability, while strafing can sometimes avoid a thrust but is less reliable than dodging. Treat those as situational options, not substitutes for learning the move. Jumping can avoid some attacks too, but the game’s own tutorial is the best place to learn which ones.
Blocking: trade stamina for protection
In Elden Ring, blocking can stop an attack but consumes stamina. A successful block is not automatically an invitation to attack: the enemy may still have another hit in the sequence. Watch for the end of the string or a clear stagger before committing to a punish.

Parrying and deflecting: similar reading, different systems
Both techniques ask you to recognize an attack and act at a precise moment, but their inputs and consequences are game-specific. The official guides do not establish a universal frame window, and not every enemy attack can necessarily be parried.
| System | What to watch and do | What success or failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring shield parry | Use the parry action for a suitable attack. Bandai Namco’s combat guide says the enemy’s hand beginning to move toward you can be a useful cue. Small shields are better at parrying than medium shields according to that guide. | A successful parry can knock an enemy weapon away and open a critical attack. A parry that is early or late leaves you hit; learn one eligible, repeatable move rather than trying to parry everything. |
| Sekiro deflection | Press guard just before impact. Distinguish a timed deflection from holding guard, and be prepared to deflect the hits in a multi-hit string. | A deflection damages enemy posture. Holding guard can be safer in some situations, but builds more posture damage on your character. |
Activision Support’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game Mechanics guide describes attacking and deflecting as the main ways to break enemy posture. Its guidance is about Sekiro’s system, not a timing rule for other Soulslikes.

Counter only when the opening is real
A defense can create a chance to attack, but the chance depends on the enemy’s recovery. The important question is not simply “Did I block or deflect?” but “Can this enemy still hit me before my attack finishes?”
Elden Ring: guard counter after a block
In Elden Ring, a guard counter is a heavy attack performed immediately after a successful block. It can inflict substantial stance damage and may lead to a critical opening. But Bandai Namco warns that a careless guard counter can be interrupted by an enemy follow-up.

Block, check whether the enemy’s sequence has ended or the enemy has bounced away, and counter only if the resulting window is safe. If another attack is coming, keep defending rather than treating the block itself as permission to swing.
Sekiro: counter-slash after a deflection
In Sekiro, a quick attack after a successful deflection performs a counter-slash. Attacks and deflections both add enemy posture, but posture can recover: Activision Support explains that lower enemy vitality slows posture recovery. Against an enemy whose posture recovers quickly, reducing vitality first can make posture pressure more effective. When posture breaks, the deathblow opening is limited, so act promptly.

- Pick a repeatable encounter. Use an ordinary enemy or a practice opponent. PlayStation Blog identifies Hanbei the Infested at the Dilapidated Temple as a Sekiro sparring partner.
- Spend one attempt observing. Do not focus on damage. Watch the windup, range, number of hits, and recovery.
- Choose one defense for that attack. Use a roll, block, parry or deflection, sidestep, or—where the game and move allow it—a jump. Change only one choice on the next attempt so you can tell what helped.
- Wait for the whole sequence to finish. Try one safe punish rather than automatically starting a full combo. Notice whether the enemy recovers, follows up, or staggers.
- Repeat, then test a different move. Once you recognize the cue, practice the same decision against another attack. Use the game’s tutorial or practice encounter before relying on a boss attempt.
This routine applies the official guides’ advice to study enemy movement and practice timing; it is a practical learning approach, not a regimen shown by a controlled performance study.
What carries over between Soulslikes—and what does not
Observation, patience, and waiting for a genuine opening are useful across games. Exact button timing, stamina or posture costs, attack eligibility, and the reward for a successful defense are not interchangeable. Treat each game as its own system: learn its tutorial, identify a move’s cue, and test one response at a time.
PlayStation Blog’s Sekiro advice for Dark Souls and Bloodborne veterans likewise points out that familiar genre instincts do not remove the need to adapt to a different combat system. In its Steelrising combat system breakdown, Gameplay Manager Sébastien Di Ruzza also emphasizes “studying your opponent’s every move.” The transferable skill is careful observation—not copying another game’s timing.
