If an iOS beta is causing trouble, first check whether you have a backup from before installing it. Apple’s process for removing an installed beta erases the iPhone and reinstalls the current public iOS, and a backup made on beta software may not restore to an earlier iOS version. If you need to downgrade, plan to restore from an archived pre-beta backup.

Before you change anything, check your backups

Find out what backups you have and when they were made before erasing or restoring the iPhone. For a downgrade, the most useful option is an archived backup made before you installed the beta. Apple warns that a backup created while using beta software may not be compatible with an earlier public iOS version. Apple’s beta-removal instructions explain this limitation.

Also check which content is synced separately. Backups do not necessarily contain every item on the phone: both iCloud and computer backups can omit data already synced to iCloud, and computer backups also exclude some synced or purchased content. Apple’s backup overview describes what each method includes.

Choose a backup method

Backup method Where it is stored and access needed Encryption and data coverage How you restore it
iCloud Stored in iCloud; backup can be made over Wi-Fi. Always encrypted. Data already synced to iCloud, such as Photos or Messages when those sync features are enabled, is not included in the backup. During iPhone setup, over Wi-Fi.
Mac or PC Stored on the computer; available space depends on that computer. You need the computer and a connection to the iPhone. Encryption is optional and off by default. An encrypted backup is required to include Health, Activity, and Keychain data. Items already synced to iCloud and certain synced or purchased content are excluded. In Finder, Apple Devices, or applicable iTunes software; an encrypted backup requires its password.

These differences are described in Apple’s guide to iPhone backups. If possible, keep both kinds of backup as alternatives, and preserve a pre-beta computer backup rather than replacing it with a newer beta-era backup.

Stop future beta updates without removing the installed beta

Turning off beta updates prevents future beta releases from being offered; it does not remove the beta version already installed. The setting depends on the iOS version:

  • iOS 16.4 or later: Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, then select Off.
  • iOS 16.3.1 or earlier: Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select the beta software profile, then remove it.

If beta software was installed using a computer, Apple says a restore is needed to remove it. See Apple’s beta-removal guidance for the distinction between stopping updates and removing the installed beta.

Remove the installed beta and reinstall public iOS

This process erases the iPhone. Use an up-to-date Mac or the current Apple Devices app on Windows. If the iPhone is running iPhone 8 or later, follow these recovery-mode steps:

Restore your personal data from a compatible backup

After reinstalling public iOS, restore from a backup made on an earlier compatible iOS version. An iPhone that is already set up must be erased before restoring from an iCloud backup; Apple’s computer-restore instructions likewise apply to a new or newly erased iPhone.

Restore from iCloud

  1. From the iPhone’s Hello screen, follow setup until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
  2. Choose From iCloud Backup and sign in to your Apple Account.
  3. Select the backup you want by checking its date and size.
  4. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while the restore runs. The initial progress can take minutes to an hour; apps and other content may continue downloading in the background for hours or days, depending on how much data you have.

Follow Apple’s steps to restore an iPhone from a backup if the setup options differ on your device.

  2. Connect the iPhone to the computer and select it.

  4. If the backup is encrypted, enter its password.

If the computer cannot restore the iPhone

Start with the computer’s software: Apple recommends installing current software when restore errors occur. For USB connection errors, try the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable, another USB port, and then a different computer. The connector you need depends on the iPhone and computer; a new cable is not automatically necessary for every beta recovery.

Record the exact error number or message and follow Apple’s instructions for that error. Restore failures can involve Apple-server connectivity, outdated computer software, a USB connection, or a possible hardware issue, so a cable is not the explanation for every failure. Apple’s update and restore error guide provides error-specific steps.
