Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If the problem persists, use the Windows Update troubleshooter, then choose the right recovery option: uninstall a recent update or go back after a major version upgrade. Back up important files before recovery steps that could affect them.
First, identify the problem
Check whether Windows starts and what kind of change preceded the trouble. A monthly quality update and an upgrade to a new Windows version have different rollback options. Note any error message and whether the symptom is slow startup, general sluggishness, freezes, crashes, or a device or driver problem. Microsoft separates recovery paths for PCs that start but behave unexpectedly from those that will not start or are stuck restarting; see Recovery options in Windows.
Slowness after an update can also come from limited storage, startup activity, outdated software, or hardware limits. Treat the update as a possible trigger, not a confirmed cause. Microsoft’s PC performance guidance covers these other contributors.
Try low-risk performance checks
- Restart the PC. A restart can clear a temporary problem after servicing or installation.
- Check resource use. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Review Processes and Performance for unusually high CPU, memory, or disk use. Close an application only if you recognize it and do not need it.
- Review startup apps. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch when you sign in.
- Check free storage. Low available space can affect performance. Use Windows storage settings to review what is taking up space; remove only files you know you no longer need.
- Check for applicable updates. Use Windows Update for available updates, including an optional driver update when it is relevant to the affected device. If a particular driver seems responsible, follow the PC or component maker’s official support instructions.
Do not use registry cleaners, generic driver-updater utilities, or routine security-disabling as speed fixes. Start with Windows’ built-in checks and troubleshooting.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
If the problem involves an update error or update servicing, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Follow its prompts, restart the PC, and check for updates again. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions.
Choose the right recovery option
Uninstalling a recent update and going back to a previous Windows version are different actions. Use the path that matches what happened:

| Option | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Performance checks and restart | The PC starts and the cause is unclear | Low disruption; helps identify resource use, storage, or startup contributors. |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | There are update errors or servicing trouble | Built-in diagnosis; restart and check for updates afterward. |
| Uninstall a recent update | The problem followed a recent update | Some updates cannot be removed. Removing a security update can leave the PC without that protection. |
| Go back | The problem followed an upgrade to a new Windows version | Usually available for 10 days after the upgrade. Keeps personal files, but removes apps, drivers, and settings added or changed since the upgrade. |
| Reinstall the current Windows version | A repair is needed and the option is available | Reinstalls the same version while preserving apps, files, and settings; requires power and internet. |
| Other recovery or reinstall methods | Earlier steps fail or Windows will not start | Effects vary; back up first and check what the chosen method removes. |
Uninstall a recent update
If the issue followed a regular update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. If Windows is inaccessible, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. Consider the security implications before removing a security update, and consult How to uninstall a Windows Update for the steps and limitations.
Go back after a version upgrade
If you upgraded to a new Windows version and the problem began afterward, open Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, if that option is available. Microsoft’s current guidance says this option is usually available for 10 days after the upgrade. It keeps personal files but removes apps, drivers, and settings added or changed since then. See Go back to the previous version of Windows.

Repair Windows or use other recovery methods
Reinstall the current version using Windows Update
For eligible Windows 11 installations, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update. This reinstalls the same Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet. See Microsoft’s instructions for fixing issues by reinstalling the current version.
Back up before more disruptive recovery
Before using other recovery or reinstall options, back up important files and check what the selected option may remove. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss. A USB drive or external drive is one possible backup destination; a drive is not required to improve performance. If reinstalling from recovery media, note that manufacturer-provided images typically include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic media may not include. Microsoft’s recovery options guide describes the available approaches.
