Review the console’s suggestions for removable add-ons, shrinkable games, duplicate installations, and games you can no longer access. Then uninstall games or components you no longer need, or change where future games install.
1. Use Xbox’s Free up space recommendations
- On your Xbox console, open My Games & Apps > Manage > Free up space.
- Review the items listed. Xbox says the tool can surface unused add-ons, games that can be made smaller, duplicate installations, and games you no longer have access to.
- Select only content you are comfortable removing, then follow the console prompts.
This is a useful first check because it identifies game-related content you may not need, rather than requiring you to guess what is using space. Menu wording can change with system updates. See Xbox’s April 2025 console update for the feature announcement.
2. Uninstall games or remove optional components
Uninstall a game you are finished with
Removing a game installation frees the space it occupies. You can reinstall it later if it is still available to your account. If you are deciding what to remove, start with titles you do not expect to play soon.
Check for removable parts of a game
Some games let you remove optional components, but this depends on whether the developer supports selective installation. Open the game’s manage-installation options and check what the title actually offers; do not assume every game separates its campaign, multiplayer, or other content.
#1 Best Overall
- EFFORTLESS XBOX INTEGRATION. Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
- ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.
- NVME SPEED YOU CAN FEEL. Low-latency performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games play directly from the card.
- QUICK RESUME READY. Instantly switch between multiple suspended games without losing progress or waiting.
- XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).
Do not delete save data as a routine way to make room for a game installation. Xbox’s general cleanup guidance centers on game installations and add-ons, not save deletion. The local-save controls discussed in an August 2026 Xbox Insider preview are not evidence of a generally available cleanup feature.
3. Set a default location for future installs
If you have another storage device attached, choose where new games and apps should go instead of repeatedly filling the same drive.

4. Choose storage that fits how you play
| Option | What it is useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Console Free up space recommendations | Finding removable add-ons, shrinkable games, duplicates, and games no longer accessible | Review suggestions before removing content; labels may change with updates. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Holding games, moving games, and directly playing Xbox One and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles | Do not assume ordinary USB storage can directly launch every Series X|S-optimized game. |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Adding storage for direct play, including Series X|S-optimized games; Xbox says performance is designed to match internal storage | It uses the console’s expansion-card port. Current models, prices, and stock are not established here. |

USB drive: extra room and transfers
Xbox documents USB 3.1 external storage as a way to store games and directly run Xbox One and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. It can also serve as a holding place for games you move back when needed. For the Series X|S optimized titles that need to launch from performance-matched storage, ordinary USB storage is not a universal direct-play solution.

Expansion card: direct play for Series X|S games
The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card fits the console’s dedicated expansion port. Xbox says it can be selected as a default installation location and can run games directly, with performance designed to match the console’s internal storage. This is the more relevant add-on if your priority is expanding capacity for direct play of Series X|S-optimized games. Xbox’s storage overview explains its intended role; it does not establish current retail prices, stock, or regional availability.

In its April 2025 update, Xbox said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream select games they own on Xbox consoles without downloading and installing first. That can avoid using local space for an eligible title, but it is not a substitute for storage when a game must be installed or is not supported for streaming. Check the current game and service terms before relying on this option.
