On Samsung Galaxy phones, go to Settings > Display > Accidental touch protection. Android menus vary by device, so Pixel and other phone owners should look for their model’s equivalent controls.
1. Turn on your phone’s accidental-touch protection
Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings > Display and switch on Accidental touch protection. Samsung describes this feature as keeping the screen inactive in a dark place to help prevent unintended calls or messages. If you need to use the phone in a dark place, Samsung says you can swipe the lock icon aside.
The setting may not be available on every model, and the wording or path can vary with the software version, carrier, and region. Samsung’s instructions are for Galaxy phones; they do not establish that other Android phones have the same feature. Samsung’s Galaxy instructions provide the steps for its supported devices.
Other Android phones
Search Settings for terms such as “accidental touch,” “pocket mode,” or “pocket protection.” If you can’t find a matching control, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Google notes that Android instructions can differ by device: Get around on your Android device.

2. Check what wakes the screen
If the screen continues to light up or register touches in a pocket, disable wake gestures you don’t use. Depending on the phone, options may include Lift to wake or double-tap to wake. On Samsung devices covered by its Canada guidance, motion controls are under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures; the precise options can vary.
On Pixel phones, review Tap to check phone and Lift to check phone in the lock-screen settings. These features let you check the screen, but disabling an unwanted wake option can reduce occasions when the display turns on in a pocket. 3. Keep a screen lock enabled
A PIN, pattern, or password helps prevent an unintended wake from turning into access to the phone or actions in its apps. A screen lock is a safeguard after the display wakes; it does not keep the screen dark or prevent every pocket touch. Google explains lock options in Set screen lock on an Android device.
4. Check the case, protector, and screen
If touches happen when you are using the phone as well as when it is in a pocket, check for a physical cause. Remove the case temporarily to see whether it presses on the screen, clean the display, and check whether a screen protector is damaged or interfering with touch. Follow the model-specific diagnostic steps from your phone maker. Google’s Pixel touch troubleshooting guide covers cleaning, case and protector checks, and diagnostics for Pixel phones.

Do not turn on a touch-sensitivity setting expecting it to prevent pocket touches: Google describes the Pixel screen-protector sensitivity option as increasing sensitivity for use with a protector.
5. Consider a case with a front cover
A compatible flip or wallet-style case can provide a physical barrier between the display and objects in a pocket or bag. Samsung Canada recommends this as an additional measure, not a substitute for the phone’s settings. Choose a case made for your exact phone model; a cover designed for a different device may not fit or protect the screen correctly.

Which approach should you try first?

If the problem persists after these checks, or touch behavior is abnormal in specific apps, contact the phone manufacturer or the app developer, as appropriate.
