1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo fix input lag or stuttering in a PC action game, first work out which problem you have: controls that respond late, motion that appears uneven, or both. Then change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same game scene. Start by checking your Windows refresh rate; next, test applicable Windows, GPU, and display-sync options. No single setting works for every game and system.
Tell input lag apart from stuttering
These problems can feel similar during play, but they are not the same. Input latency is a delay between an action—such as pressing a key or moving a mouse—and the game’s response. Stuttering is uneven frame delivery, which makes motion appear to hitch or jump. You can have either symptom or both.
“Lag” can also mean online delay. The steps here address local PC graphics and display behavior; they do not diagnose network latency. NVIDIA also distinguishes frame throughput from system-latency measurements, so a game’s frame rate alone does not establish whether controls are responding promptly.
Make a baseline before changing settings
- Open the game and visit a repeatable scene where you notice the problem.
- Note whether the controls feel delayed, motion looks uneven, or both. Record whether it happens in one game or several.
- Change one setting at a time, then revisit the same scene. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or made things worse.
Check the refresh rate Windows is using
A display may support more than one refresh rate, and Windows may not be set to the rate you intend to use. On Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose a refresh rate offered for the connected display.
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Only select an available option: the rates shown depend on the display and its connection. Microsoft notes that the benefit of changing refresh rate depends on the content and display capabilities. A higher rate is not a fix for every cause of stutter or delay.
Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations
If you use Windows 11 and play a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game in windowed or borderless mode, test the windowed-game optimization setting. After changing it, restart the game before judging the result.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default settings.
- Find Optimizations for windowed games and test the setting for the compatible game.
- Restart the game and compare the same scene with your baseline.
If your PC has more than one GPU, the Graphics settings page also lets you review a per-game graphics preference and select the high-performance GPU. This applies to multi-GPU systems; it is not a general stutter setting.
Use the latency option that matches your GPU
NVIDIA: try Reflex when the game supports it
Check the game’s own settings for NVIDIA Reflex. If the title offers Reflex, test that in-game option. If it does not, NVIDIA identifies the driver’s Ultra Low Latency setting as an alternative. Reflex overrides the driver functionality when both are enabled, so do not enable both expecting an additive benefit.

Feature availability depends on the game and hardware. If the game does not offer Reflex, that does not mean another setting can reproduce Reflex in every title.
AMD: test Anti-Lag where supported
On supported AMD systems and games, test Anti-Lag in the game profile or global graphics settings. AMD describes it as dynamically adjusting frame timing to reduce input-to-response delay, with the best results expected in GPU-limited situations. Support varies by GPU, game, API, and software version.

- VSync: Its behavior interacts with the display refresh rate. NVIDIA describes stutter when frame rates fall below the refresh cap, so compare the result in your game rather than assuming VSync will always smooth motion.
- Adaptive sync: AMD describes FreeSync as matching display refresh to frame rate to address stutter and tearing. It requires compatible hardware and display support.
Change one sync option at a time and replay the same scene. Keep the setting that improves the symptom you are actually seeing; if it makes motion or responsiveness worse, revert it.
If the problem continues
If these checks do not resolve the issue, consult the specific game’s and hardware vendor’s support guidance. The settings above do not establish a universal fix for shader-compilation stalls, overheating, memory pressure, network delay, or a failing component. Those causes require diagnosis for the particular game and system rather than more changes to latency or sync settings.
