Choose by comparing the finished jackets—their construction, fit, ventilation, durability and intended use—not just the membrane or fabric technology.
What the labels mean
These names describe different things, so treating them as three competing membrane brands can be misleading.

Material claims can also vary by product and season. Patagonia says it added GORE-TEX ePE products to its line in Fall 2024, describing ePE as a material that enables durable waterproof gear without perfluorinated chemicals. That announcement does not mean every GORE-TEX product—or every competing product—uses the same chemistry. Check the current model’s materials information. Patagonia’s ePE explainer.
How to compare jackets fairly
Compare complete jackets intended for similar conditions. Layer arrangement, outer fabric, backer or lining, garment design and intended use all affect the result. A membrane trademark by itself does not establish a jacket’s durability, weight or comfort.

- Construction: Identify whether a jacket is two-layer, 2.5-layer or three-layer, and consider how its face fabric and interior are assembled. The layer count helps describe construction; it is not a universal performance ranking.
- Waterproofness and breathability figures: Compare published numbers only when the test methods, conditions and units match. REI cautions that specifications from different brands cannot be compared spec-for-spec. REI’s explanation of how rain gear works.
- Activity and weather: A daily commute, a steady hike, a fast trail effort and alpine or ski use place different demands on a shell. For hard efforts, heat, humidity and exertion can affect comfort even when the garment is waterproof.
- Ventilation and fit: Check whether the hood, cuffs and hem adjust securely, whether there is room for the layers you wear, and whether the jacket allows movement. Consider ventilation features for high-output use.
- Durability and weight: Match the face fabric and construction to expected abrasion and frequency of use. Do not use the membrane name as a substitute for checking the actual garment.
- Care: Read the sewn-in care label and the maker’s instructions. Washing guidance varies by garment; do not assume one detergent or DWR treatment is right for every shell.
Choose by the way you will use it
Everyday rain and commuting
Prioritize a comfortable fit, useful pockets, a hood that works for your commute and straightforward care. For ordinary rain, those garment-level details may matter more than the distinction between membrane labels. This is a practical inference from the importance of construction and design, not the result of a controlled comparison.
Hiking and fast-moving activities
Pay close attention to ventilation, fit and the maker’s information about the specific garment. A breathable membrane cannot remove all the heat and moisture produced by exertion, particularly in warm, humid conditions. Pertex likewise describes membrane breathability as changing with user output.

Severe weather, frequent use or abrasion
Inspect the shell’s construction, face fabric and design for the conditions you expect. A premium technology label alone does not establish that the whole jacket is suited to repeated abrasion or a particular activity.

The durable water repellent (DWR) finish on a shell’s outer fabric helps water bead and roll away; it is distinct from the waterproof membrane. If the face fabric becomes saturated, the jacket can feel cold and clammy even while the membrane remains waterproof. Wet-out is not, by itself, proof of a membrane leak. GORE-TEX explains the difference between DWR and membrane waterproofness.

Dirt, sunscreen, skin oils and other contaminants can affect performance. Patagonia and Pertex advise keeping waterproof garments clean, and Pertex says washing removes contaminants that can affect the membrane and DWR.
