Those features can increase wireless capacity, but they do not guarantee faster internet in every room. To use Wi-Fi 7 features, you need both a Wi-Fi 7 router and compatible client devices; Wi-Fi 6E is an important distinction because it adds 6 GHz without becoming Wi-Fi 7.
What changes between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6 is based on 802.11ax, while Wi-Fi 7 is based on 802.11be. In Intel’s comparison, Wi-Fi 6 uses the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, supports channel widths up to 160 MHz, and uses 1024-QAM. Wi-Fi 7 adds 6 GHz support, channels up to 320 MHz, and 4096-QAM. These are capability differences, not promises of a particular speed in your home.

What Wi-Fi 7 features may change in everyday use
6 GHz adds another option, not a Wi-Fi 7-only feature
Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 to the 6 GHz band. That means a router or device using 6 GHz is not necessarily Wi-Fi 7; check the exact standard and supported features on both ends of the connection. Access to 6 GHz also depends on regional regulations, device-maker enablement, compatible equipment, and software or driver support. Intel’s guidance covers its own products and notes these conditions in its 6 GHz support information.

Wider channels and 4096-QAM raise potential capacity
Wi-Fi 7’s 320 MHz channels are twice the maximum width listed for Wi-Fi 6 in Intel’s comparison. 4096-QAM can also encode more data per transmission than Wi-Fi 6’s 1024-QAM when the wireless link is good enough to support it. These features describe peak capability; they do not mean a device will achieve those conditions through walls or at a distance.
MLO can use multiple links
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets compatible Wi-Fi 7 devices transmit data across multiple frequency bands. Intel describes possible improvements to throughput, latency, and reliability, but its cited overview does not give a measured improvement for a specific router-and-client combination in a typical household. See Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 overview for its description of MLO.

Will Wi-Fi 7 make your home internet faster?
It may improve wireless capacity or connection characteristics when the router and client support the relevant features and the link conditions suit them. But a faster Wi-Fi link does not automatically raise the internet speed delivered by your ISP, and a headline capability is not a room-by-room speed estimate.
Intel gives a theoretical maximum of 5.76 Gbps for a specified 2×2 Wi-Fi 7 client supporting 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM, and MLO. It estimates 5.19 Gbps maximum over the air by assuming 90% efficiency. These are conditional figures from Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 performance information, not independent household measurements or guaranteed internet speeds.

Actual wireless speed depends on factors including the ISP plan’s bandwidth, suitable Wi-Fi equipment, network congestion, and physical interference such as walls. Intel lists these factors in its article on Wi-Fi 7 and gaming performance. The same practical constraints matter when evaluating a home network.
What equipment do you need to use Wi-Fi 7?
Both the router and the client device need Wi-Fi 7 support to use Wi-Fi 7 functionality. Replacing a Wi-Fi 6 router does not upgrade the radio in a Wi-Fi 6 laptop, phone, or other client; that device continues to connect using the capabilities it supports.

Requirements can vary by manufacturer and product. For Intel wireless products, Intel states that a Wi-Fi 7-compatible router and Windows 11 24H2 or later are required to enable Wi-Fi 7 functionality. Do not treat that Intel-specific operating-system guidance as a universal rule for every vendor’s equipment. Consult Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 support guidance for its product context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to upgrade
- List the devices that would benefit. Check whether your laptops, phones, desktops, or other important clients support Wi-Fi 7, rather than considering the router alone.
- Check the router’s actual capabilities. Confirm that it supports Wi-Fi 7 features you intend to use; do not infer those features merely from 6 GHz support.
- Check 6 GHz availability for your equipment and location. Regional rules, manufacturer enablement, drivers, and operating-system support can affect whether devices can use it.
- Compare your internet plan with your current bottleneck. If your ISP service is the limiting factor, greater wireless peak capacity may not change the speed you see online.
- Consider the home environment. Congestion, distance, and walls affect wireless performance, so evaluate where devices are used and what is slowing them down.
A household whose devices are all Wi-Fi 6 should not expect those clients to gain Wi-Fi 7 capabilities simply by installing a new router. The upgrade has a clearer rationale when compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients will use it or when the household needs compatible local wireless capacity; the actual improvement still depends on the specific equipment and environment.
