Use winver to identify the Windows release installed on your PC, then use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to see whether it meets Windows 11 requirements. Finally, check Windows Update to find out whether the upgrade is currently offered. Eligibility and an available upgrade offer are separate results.
How do I check my Windows version?
- Select the taskbar search box, type
winver, and open the result. - Read the version information in the window that appears. Microsoft documents
winveras a way to see which Windows version is installed. Microsoft’s instructions for checking your Windows version.
Is my PC eligible for a Windows 11 update?
For a PC running Windows 10, use PC Health Check for a compatibility assessment. Search for the app in Windows, open it, and select Check now. It reports whether the PC is eligible and can identify requirements it does not meet. If the app is not installed, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check download page.
How to check whether Windows 11 is available to install
Open Settings > Windows Update and review the update status. PC Health Check answers whether the PC meets the requirements; Windows Update shows whether Microsoft is offering the upgrade to that PC now. An eligible PC may not receive an immediate offer because rollout timing varies, or because a known compatibility issue is delaying it. See Microsoft’s guidance on getting Windows 11.
What Windows 11 requirements does PC Health Check assess?
Microsoft’s minimum requirements include the following. The processor must also be included on Microsoft’s approved CPU list; meeting the listed figures alone does not establish compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- A compatible processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM version 2.0.
- Graphics compatible with DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches, with 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel.
Some Windows 11 features and apps have requirements beyond these minimums. For a Windows 10 PC, Microsoft says the device must run a currently supported version of Windows 10 to upgrade; its system-requirements guidance specifies Windows 10, version 2004 or later, for upgrading through Windows Update. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.
What if PC Health Check and Windows Update disagree?
If the PC’s hardware has changed recently, Microsoft says it can take up to 24 hours for the eligibility assessment to refresh. Check again after that period. If the PC is managed by an organization, ask its IT administrator about eligibility and upgrade timing.
