A water-resistant jacket can handle light, brief rain; a waterproof jacket is built for stronger or longer exposure. The difference is not just the fabric: waterproof protection also depends on construction details such as sealed seams and protected openings. Durable water repellent (DWR) helps water bead on the outside, but DWR alone does not make a jacket waterproof.
What do “water-resistant,” “water-repellent” and “waterproof” mean?
Water-resistant
A water-resistant jacket slows water from getting through, often through tightly woven fabric or a surface treatment. It can be a practical choice for light, occasional showers, but its protection can be exceeded by heavier rain or longer exposure. There is no single exposure threshold established by the term itself. The North Face explains the distinction.
Water-repellent and DWR
Durable water repellent, or DWR, is a finish that encourages water to bead and run off the fabric’s surface. It can help limit face-fabric saturation, but it is not the barrier that blocks water through a waterproof garment. A waterproof jacket may also have DWR, so the presence of that finish alone does not establish that a jacket is waterproof. Columbia describes DWR and waterproofing.
Waterproof
A waterproof jacket uses a water-blocking membrane or layer. Its performance also depends on how the garment is made: water can enter through seams, zippers, pockets or other openings if those areas are not adequately protected. Check whether seams are fully taped or only sealed in critical areas. Helly Hansen’s comparison discusses waterproof construction.

Which type should you choose?

Labels alone do not tell you how a jacket will perform in every situation. Compare the construction and consider how hard and how long you expect to be in the rain. If a maker publishes a waterproof rating, check what test and garment construction it applies to; the sources here do not establish one universal hydrostatic-head cutoff or a rating that guarantees protection in every use.
Why does seam construction matter?
A waterproof fabric panel does not by itself make the entire jacket waterproof. Stitching creates holes, and openings such as zippers can provide routes for water to enter. Seam tape or other sealing methods address those vulnerable points. Fully taped seams and critically taped seams are not the same: critical taping covers selected areas rather than every seam. Check the product description for which approach it uses, along with details about closures and storm protection.

How does breathability affect comfort?
A waterproof barrier can keep rain out while also making it harder for sweat vapor to escape. Waterproof-breathable designs aim to let water vapor pass outward, but the balance depends on the garment’s design and how intensely you are moving. For strenuous activity, consider breathability alongside rain protection rather than assuming every waterproof jacket will feel comfortable during exertion. DWR can wear down with use. Columbia says spray-on or wash-in products can reapply the finish, but reproofing treats the fabric surface: it does not add a waterproof membrane or seal seams. Follow the care instructions for the specific garment, and do not treat renewed beading as proof that the jacket has become waterproof.
