The goal is to light the entry, path, or other target—not to make the whole yard as bright as possible.
1. Decide whether the light is needed
Start by asking what the light is meant to illuminate and when that task occurs. If it serves no clear purpose, switch it off or remove it. DarkSky and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) put this principle first: “All light should have a clear purpose.” DarkSky and IES Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting can contribute to brighter night skies and ecological disruption, among other effects described by the U.S. Department of Energy. 2. Shield and aim the fixture before changing the bulb
Light that escapes above or beyond the area you need is spill, not useful security coverage. Choose or adjust a fixture so its beam points downward at the intended area, such as a doorway or path. DarkSky recommends full shielding and advises that a fixture direct light downward, no higher than 80 degrees from the nadir, in its home outdoor-lighting assessment. A bulb swap alone cannot fix an exposed bulb, an unshielded fixture, or poor aiming. For an existing light, check whether a compatible shield or retrofit accessory can control the beam, then adjust the fixture’s direction. Confirm that any accessory is approved for that fixture and does not interfere with its sensor, ventilation, or safe operation. 3. Use the lowest output that does the job
Brightness is measured in lumens; use only enough output for the task and conditions at your home. DarkSky’s home assessment suggests keeping total output below 1,000 lumens. As task examples—not universal security-lighting standards—it gives 300–800 lumens for work areas outside a garage and 300 lumens or less for pathways. If a fixture is too bright, try a lower-output bulb that is compatible with it. When selecting a replacement fixture, compare its total lumen output as well as its beam direction and shielding. Do not assume that more lumens mean better security; light directed onto the target is more useful than excess light scattered around the property.
4. Limit when the light is on
Use a motion sensor, timer, dimmer, or manual switch to make light available when needed and reduce it or turn it off at other times. - Motion sensor: Useful when light is needed briefly on approach. Check that the sensor covers the intended area without triggering constantly from traffic, animals, or other movement.
- Timer: Useful for predictable periods, such as evening hours. Set an off time rather than leaving the light on all night by default.
- Dimmer: Can reduce output when full brightness is unnecessary, but only use a dimmer with a fixture and bulb designed to work with it.
- Switch: A simple option when the light is only occasionally needed and someone can turn it on and off.

5. Choose a warmer color where feasible
Color temperature, shown in kelvins (K), describes whether light appears warmer or cooler. For home outdoor lighting, DarkSky recommends a warm or amber color temperature of 2700 K or lower. If using a bulb above 2700 K, its assessment advises careful shielding, aiming, and control. This is a home-assessment recommendation, not a universal legal limit. DarkSky Approved Luminaires program criteria for residential fixtures allow a nominal color temperature up to 3000 K. That program threshold is distinct from the more conservative 2700 K home-assessment recommendation; neither should be mistaken for a local code requirement. For an existing fixture that is otherwise suitable, a compatible shield, lower-output warm bulb, and control may address the main problems. Replace the fixture if it cannot direct light where it is needed or cannot safely accommodate the changes. If shopping, look for a fully shielded motion-sensor security light; consider a warm outdoor bulb only for a compatible, appropriately shielded fixture. No specific brand or model is established here as tested or approved.

If you rent
