If Ethernet is slower than expected, work from the computer toward the internet: repeat a controlled speed test, check the negotiated link speed, inspect the cable and every port in the connection path, and compare router-connected results with a modem test if your ISP setup allows it. Those checks help identify whether the limit is one device, shared home equipment, or the internet service.

Start with a repeatable speed-test baseline

A speed test measures performance between a particular device and a particular test server. It does not identify the component causing a slowdown. Results can vary with server location and network congestion, so compare tests made under similar conditions rather than treating one result as a diagnosis. Google explains that its test measures between a Google Wifi point and Google servers, and that server location and congestion affect results: Google’s speed-test guidance.

  1. Connect one computer to the router with Ethernet. Pause downloads, cloud backups, streaming, and other high-bandwidth activity where practical.
  2. Run several tests using the same computer and connection path. Record download speed, upload speed, time, and test server when shown.
  3. Note whether the result is consistently low or only dips occasionally. Avoid comparing tests from different devices, times, or servers as if they were directly equivalent.

For troubleshooting its modem, TP-Link advises connecting one end device by cable and running Speedtest three times without high-bandwidth activity. That is vendor-specific guidance, not a universal testing standard. TP-Link’s modem troubleshooting procedure.

Check the Ethernet link speed and every part of the path

Look up the Ethernet connection status on the computer or adapter and record its negotiated link speed. That figure describes the link between connected network devices; it is not the same as your internet speed-test result. If the link shows 100 Mbps or less when your service and equipment should support more, inspect the path. The reading is a clue, not proof that the cable is faulty.

Check the capability and condition of every component between the computer and router or modem:

  • The computer’s built-in Ethernet adapter or USB-to-Ethernet adapter
  • Each cable segment, wall jack, coupler, and switch
  • The router LAN port and, where relevant, the modem’s Ethernet port
  • Whether the cable is connected to a LAN port rather than the router’s WAN/Internet port

Make sure plugs are firmly seated at both ends. Windows support recommends checking both cable connections, trying another cable, and confirming the correct router port. Microsoft’s Ethernet connection troubleshooting steps.

To isolate a suspected segment, substitute a known-good cable and connect the computer directly to a proven gigabit-capable port, temporarily removing switches, wall wiring, or couplers. Intel recommends this approach for separating adapter or path problems from other causes. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet speeds above 100 Mbps; its Nest Wifi and Google Wifi Ethernet ports are specified as 10/100/1000 Mbps. Those port specifications apply to those Google products, not all routers. Google’s guidance on port ratings and cabling; Intel’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

A cable upgrade alone will not help if another device or port in the path is limited to 100 Mbps, or if the cause is the router, plan, or ISP connection. Confirm the full path’s capabilities before buying replacement equipment.

Compare the router path with a direct modem test

If your ISP equipment and service setup permit it, compare the same computer’s result through the router with a direct connection to the modem. Use a known-good cable and follow your ISP’s instructions. Some connections require authentication or a modem restart when you change the connected device. A direct modem connection also places the computer directly on the internet, so disconnect it and restore your normal router connection after the test.

  1. Run and record a test with the computer connected through the router.
  2. Following your ISP’s instructions, connect that computer directly to the modem and run the same kind of test.
  3. Reconnect through the router and compare the results, accounting for differences in time or test server.

If both paths are similarly slow across repeat tests, the modem, service, or ISP connection deserves attention. If the direct modem result is materially faster, focus on the router, its settings and ports, or anything between the router and computer. TP-Link and NETGEAR describe modem/client/router comparisons as ways to locate a bottleneck. TP-Link’s comparison procedure; NETGEAR’s internet speed troubleshooting guidance.

Find out whether the slowdown affects one device or several

Test another wired device using the same cable and port, then test the suspect computer on a known-good path. This comparison helps separate a client-specific issue from a shared equipment or service problem.

  • Only one computer is slow: Check its Ethernet adapter, USB-to-Ethernet dongle if used, drivers or configuration, and background activity. Microsoft lists a USB-to-Ethernet adapter among possible sources of Ethernet connection problems. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
  • Several devices are slow: Prioritize shared components such as the router, modem, cabling or switches, and the internet service. A busy connection or service issue can also affect multiple devices.

Google notes that the ISP controls the initial bandwidth coming into the home, while congestion or service issues can affect performance. Google’s Nest Wifi and Google Wifi troubleshooting guide.

Restart the equipment, retest, and prepare to escalate

Restart the modem and router according to their support instructions, then repeat the same test. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance is to unplug both devices, wait about 30 seconds, restore power to the modem first, and then restore power to the router. Follow your equipment’s instructions if they differ. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting steps.

If the problem remains, share useful evidence with your ISP or equipment vendor:

  • Your plan’s advertised speed and the repeated download/upload results
  • Test times and server names, if shown
  • The computer’s negotiated Ethernet link speed
  • Modem, router, adapter, and switch models involved in the path
  • Whether another wired device had the same issue
  • Whether direct-to-modem results differed materially from router-path results
