Choose a switch by counting the wired devices it must serve, including the connection to your router or upstream switch, then match port speeds to the devices and uplink. Gigabit is enough for gigabit-only equipment; 2.5GbE or faster is useful only when the connected devices and network links can use it. If the switch will power cameras, phones, or access points, check PoE separately.
How many Ethernet ports do you need?
Make an inventory of the fixed devices that will connect by Ethernet. Count computers, TVs, game consoles, printers, NAS devices, access points, cameras, phones, and any other wired equipment. Then add a port for the cable connecting the switch to your router or upstream switch.
Compare that total with the switch’s actual RJ45 copper-port count. SFP or SFP+ slots are separate uplink options, not ordinary Ethernet ports for copper patch cables; count one only if you intend to use a compatible transceiver and fiber connection. Leave a modest reserve for likely additions, rather than choosing a much larger switch without a reason. Manufacturers offer different port-count classes because the right size depends on the network’s workload, not a universal household average. TP-Link’s unmanaged-switch catalog shows a range of sizes.
What port speed should you choose?
Match the speed to the devices and links that need to communicate. A faster switch cannot make a slower network adapter operate faster, and it does not raise the bandwidth of an internet plan. Local network traffic and internet access are separate constraints.

| Port speed | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 1 Gb/s | Choose gigabit when the wired endpoints and the relevant router or uplink are gigabit. It is a sensible match for a network without multi-gig-capable devices. |
| 2.5 Gb/s | Consider it for devices that support multi-gigabit connections and can use the extra bandwidth, such as a suitable access point, NAS, or workstation. TP-Link says its Omada 2.5G ports also support 1G and 100 Mbps devices through speed negotiation, and its product-family guidance says Cat5e supports 2.5G. Check the specific switch and installation requirements. TP-Link Omada 2.5G switch guidance |
| 5 or 10 Gb/s | Consider these speeds only when the endpoint, uplink, cabling, and budget justify them. The TP-Link catalog includes higher-speed options, but that does not mean every home network benefits from them. |
For a multi-gig connection to deliver more than 1 Gb/s between devices, the relevant endpoints and the path between them must also support that speed. A multi-gig switch connected to a gigabit router or gigabit client does not remove those limits.
Does the switch need PoE?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a separate choice from data speed. It lets a switch power compatible devices over the network cable, but having enough ports does not guarantee enough power. If you plan to power access points, cameras, or phones, check:

- How many connected devices need PoE.
- The PoE standard and maximum power draw each device requires.
- The switch’s per-port power capability and the total PoE power budget.
TP-Link’s switch buying guide treats PoE device count, speed, power requirements, installation location, and copper or fiber access as separate selection questions. Choose a PoE model against the actual devices’ requirements, not just its Ethernet-port count.
Do you need a managed switch?
An unmanaged switch is often enough when the goal is simply to add wired ports. Managed switches can offer controls for networks that need traffic handling or separation—for example, VLANs, QoS, access-control lists (ACLs), or centralized controller administration. The available features vary by model, and those controls add configuration choices that a basic port expansion may not need. TP-Link’s Omada materials describe these options for its managed models.

Where will the switch sit?
For a desk or living space, check whether the switch is desktop-sized and fanless if quiet operation matters. For a wiring closet or rack, consider rack mounting, power, and the type and speed of uplink you need. Placement is part of the choice: a switch that suits a rack may be inconvenient in a living area. TP-Link’s buying guide includes installation location among its selection factors.
A compact 2.5G example
The TP-Link Omada ES206X-M2 is listed as a five-port 2.5GBASE-T easy-managed switch with one 10GE SFP+ slot. It illustrates how a compact switch can combine multi-gig copper ports with a separate fiber uplink option; it is not a default recommendation for every network. Check the official Omada listing for current availability and exact layout, and confirm that the SFP+ uplink and management features fit your setup.

Quick selection checklist
- Count wired devices and include the router or upstream-switch connection.
- Count RJ45 ports separately from SFP/SFP+ slots.
- Match switch speed to the endpoints and uplinks that can use it.
- For PoE, verify the standard, required per-port power, number of powered ports, and total budget.
- Choose managed features only if you need their controls.
- Check form factor, fan noise, uplink type, and placement.
Product specifications and availability can vary by model and region, so verify the exact listing for the switch you are considering.
