If you only need more wired network ports for devices such as TVs, computers, consoles, or printers, an unmanaged Ethernet switch is usually the right fit. Choose a smart-managed or managed switch when you have a specific need for controls such as VLANs, traffic handling, monitoring, or security—and confirm the exact model supports them.
What is the difference between unmanaged and managed switches?
An unmanaged switch has no user configuration interface. Connect it to your router or another switch, then connect your wired devices; it forwards Ethernet traffic automatically. It adds ports to the existing network, but does not create a separate internet connection or a configurable security boundary. TP-Link and Cisco describe unmanaged switches as plug-and-play options for basic connectivity and home use: TP-Link and Cisco.
Managed switches expose settings that let you control or observe aspects of network traffic. The category includes products with very different capabilities, so the label alone does not tell you what a particular model can do.
Smart-managed or easy-smart switches
These products commonly offer a limited set of controls through a web interface. Depending on the model, that might include basic VLAN or QoS settings, link aggregation, IGMP snooping, or port mirroring. Check the individual feature list: offerings vary by vendor and model. TP-Link describes its managed-switch categories and features here.

Fully managed switches
More extensive managed models may add broader configuration, monitoring, and security options, such as access control lists (ACLs), authentication, SNMP, or command-line access. These features matter when you intend to configure and maintain them; paying for a higher tier does not automatically improve basic port expansion. Cisco outlines the distinction between unmanaged and managed switching in its switch overview.
When is an unmanaged switch enough?
Choose unmanaged if your goal is simply to connect more wired devices to the same home network. Count the ports you need for devices and include one port for the connection back to your router or upstream switch. TP-Link and Cisco both position plug-and-play unmanaged switches for straightforward connectivity and home or small-office use (TP-Link; Cisco).

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
For a home without a specific segmentation, monitoring, or traffic-control requirement, a configurable switch can add setup work without addressing a real need. Unmanaged is not a lesser choice for this use case; it is the simpler tool for it.

Choose a smart-managed or managed model when you can name the control you want to use. Common reasons include separating device groups, prioritizing or handling traffic, monitoring connections, or applying security controls. Compare the precise features and configuration options of candidate models rather than assuming all products called “managed” offer the same capabilities.

You need VLANs or device separation
Look for explicit VLAN support, but treat VLANs as an end-to-end network setup, not a switch-only security feature. Your router and any access points involved must also support and correctly carry or enforce the VLAN configuration; a managed switch by itself does not create complete isolation. Cisco provides an overview of VLANs and their role in network segmentation here.
You need monitoring, traffic handling, or security controls
Identify the exact feature you expect to use—such as QoS, port mirroring, SNMP, or ACLs—and verify it appears in the model’s specifications. A basic smart-managed switch may offer only a subset of these options, while more extensive models can provide broader controls. Feature availability varies across manufacturers and product lines.

You are building a home lab or adding network equipment
A managed switch can be useful when you are intentionally segmenting a home lab, connecting multiple access points, or managing cameras and other equipment. The rest of the network must support the design, and the switch’s features need to match the configuration you plan to use. For ordinary port expansion, that extra capability may not be useful.

Check these details before you buy
- Port count: Include the uplink to the router or upstream switch in your count, along with the ports needed for devices.
- Ethernet speed: Check the speed of the router, switch ports, and connected devices. A switch cannot make a slower endpoint link faster.
- PoE: Power over Ethernet is separate from management. If you want to power compatible access points or cameras through the Ethernet cable, verify the switch’s PoE standard and total power budget against the devices’ requirements. See Cisco’s PoE overview.
- Router and mesh compatibility: Check the guidance for your existing system before enabling switch features. For example, eero recommends disabling or removing features including STP/RSTP, IGMP, VLANs, and QoS when using a managed switch with its system: eero’s advanced network settings guidance.
- Practical fit: Compare configuration effort, needed controls, port count, speed, PoE capability, noise, form factor, and compatibility with your router or mesh system.
How to choose for your home
- Write down what you need the switch to do. If the answer is only “add ports,” start with an unmanaged model. If you need separation, monitoring, or another control, identify that feature by name.
- Check the rest of the network. For VLANs or advanced traffic handling, verify that your router and access points support the setup. Check your router or mesh vendor’s guidance for known compatibility requirements.
- Match the hardware to your devices. Confirm port count, Ethernet speeds, and, if needed, PoE standard and power budget.
- Compare exact model specifications. Make sure the switch has the specific controls you intend to use; “smart-managed” and “managed” are not guarantees of a standard feature set.
