Connect a LAN port on your router to any available port on the unmanaged switch, connect your wired devices to the switch’s other ports, then power it on. For this basic home setup, an unmanaged switch is plug-and-play: TP-Link says it requires no configuration and has no management interface or IP address. The usual network order is modem or ISP gateway → router → switch → wired devices.

What you need before connecting the switch

  • An unmanaged Ethernet switch with enough ports for your router uplink and wired devices. The uplink uses one port, so a five-port switch can connect up to four other wired devices.
  • Ethernet cables for the router-to-switch connection and each device you plan to wire. Use the cable type and length supported by your equipment.
  • The switch’s supplied power adapter or power cable.

Check the switch’s labels and manual before wiring. On the unmanaged models described by TP-Link, any port can connect to the uplink device; a particular model may designate a specific port. The switch adds wired Ethernet connections, but it does not create a new Wi-Fi network.

Connect the switch to your home network

  1. Identify the router and its LAN ports. The normal path is modem or ISP gateway → router → switch. If your ISP device combines modem and router functions, follow its instructions and connect on its LAN side. A switch does not take the place of a router, which is needed to share an internet connection among multiple devices.
  2. Place and power the switch. Set it near a power outlet and the cables you need. NETGEAR’s GS105v5/GS108v4 installation guide connects the network devices and uplink before powering the switch; follow the sequence and power instructions for your own model.
  3. Connect the uplink. Plug an Ethernet cable into a LAN port on the router and an available port on the switch. Do not connect the switch to a modem-only port as a substitute for the router connection.
  4. Connect your wired devices. Plug computers, TVs, game consoles, printers, access points, or other clients into the switch’s remaining ports.
  5. Check the indicators. Look for the power light and link indicators on the router-facing and device-facing ports. On some models, port LEDs also indicate speed. Colors and patterns vary, so use the LED legend in the manual for your exact switch.

Special wiring cases to check

Mesh Wi-Fi systems

Mesh systems can have specific wiring rules. Google’s instructions allow a switch to add LAN ports to Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi when connected to a LAN port on the router or primary Wifi point. TP-Link’s Deco guidance differs by operating mode: in Router mode, satellites must connect to the main Deco’s LAN or to a switch connected to it; in Access Point mode, they may connect to any Deco or the main modem/router. Follow the official instructions for your exact system and mode.

Avoid network loops

Do not connect two switch ports back into the same network or add redundant links unless your equipment documents a supported design. TP-Link warns that, in Deco Router mode, wiring a satellite so its path bypasses the main Deco can create a network loop.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

A PoE switch port can carry data to a non-PoE device, but it will not power that device. To power a camera, access point, or other client over Ethernet, both the switch and client must support compatible PoE. Check the specifications for the exact devices; do not assume that a port supplies power.

Troubleshoot a device that will not connect

  1. Check switch power. Confirm the power indicator is on and the adapter or cable is firmly connected.
  2. Check the physical link. Reseat the Ethernet cable at both ends and look for link indicators on the switch. Consult its manual rather than assuming a particular LED color means the same thing on every model.
  3. Verify the uplink. Make sure the cable runs from a router LAN port to the switch, not to an unrelated WAN port or a modem-only connection.
  4. Swap one component at a time. Try a known-working Ethernet cable, a different switch port, and a router LAN port that works when a device is connected directly.
  5. Test the router connection directly. Connect a device to the router and check whether it receives network access and internet service. The switch cannot provide the router’s network-addressing or internet-sharing function.
  6. Recheck mesh wiring. If the network uses mesh equipment, compare the connections with the manufacturer’s diagram for the system’s model and operating mode.

If these checks do not resolve the issue, consult the switch and router documentation for model-specific LED meanings and troubleshooting. A single symptom or light pattern does not identify a universal cause.

What the switch does—and does not do

An unmanaged switch extends the number of wired Ethernet ports available on a network. It does not replace the router, configure itself through a management page, or guarantee faster internet. A faster switch can only deliver a speed increase when the router, client, cabling, internet service, and traffic path can all use that speed. Choose port count, speed, and PoE support to match the devices and network you actually have.
