What you need to know about the story
In the first Death Stranding, Sam Porter Bridges is tasked with reconnecting the divided United Cities of America, outpost by outpost, through the Chiral Network. That premise is a useful spoiler-light starting point, but the original game provides the fuller experience of how Sam and the other characters reach that point. PlayStation’s official sequel page describes the original’s setup and confirms that the sequel includes a story summary for newcomers.

The sequel is set 11 months after the first game, according to PlayStation Blog’s May 8, 2025 hands-on report. Sam is living quietly with Lou before an incident leads him into a new journey, beginning in Mexico and continuing to Australia.

For a quicker start: use the sequel’s recap
From Death Stranding 2’s main menu, watch the brief recap of the first game. PlayStation’s beginner’s guide says the recap is for both newcomers and players who need a refresher. During the story, consult the Corpus for names and terminology, and revisit its Story So Far page as needed.

If you choose the full-context route, check that the edition you select is compatible with your platform. PlayStation lists Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for PS5 and PC; its February 12, 2026 PC announcement gives March 19, 2026 as the PC launch date. Verify the current store listing for the original game before buying, since availability and edition options depend on the platform and region.
