Death Stranding Director’s Cut keeps the original campaign as its foundation, then adds integrated missions, activities, equipment and delivery tools. On PS5, it also adds DualSense, audio and display features; on PC, the main differences are the expanded game content. Whether it is worth switching depends on which platform you own and whether you want those additions—not on a changed ending, which the official materials do not establish.

What changes in Director’s Cut?

The original journey remains the core experience. Kojima Productions says the new content is designed into the game and encountered through discovery, rather than presented as a separate replacement campaign. The developer encouraged new and returning players to start from the beginning to experience the additions as intended. Kojima Productions’ announcement describes the new material.

New story missions and locations

Director’s Cut adds story missions and areas, including the Ruined Factory, an underground facility with additional dangers. Kojima Productions describes extended storylines and new stealth missions. The cited official materials do not quantify how many extra hours these additions provide, nor do they establish a different ending.

New activities and challenges

The added activities include a Firing Range, a vehicle racing track and mode, boss battle challenges, and selected mission challenges. Rankings let Porters compare their results with other players. These are additions alongside the central delivery campaign, not a replacement for it. PlayStation’s launch announcement outlines the content.

How does Director’s Cut compare by platform?

The extra missions and gameplay systems are the central differences across editions. The PS5 version additionally has the listed DualSense, audio and display features. The PC release announcement also noted Intel XeSS support as upcoming at the time of publication; that announcement alone does not confirm its current technical status. Kojima Productions’ platform page lists PS5, PC, iPhone/iPad/Mac, Xbox Series X|S and Amazon Luna, but storefront availability can vary by region and date. Check the developer’s platform page and the relevant storefront for current availability.

Can you transfer a save or upgrade from the original?

PlayStation says PS4 save data can be transferred to the PS5 edition. The official PC release announcement says existing PC owners can upgrade through the in-game storefront at a reduced price and transfer saves. These statements confirm that transfer and upgrade paths were offered, but they do not establish today’s upgrade price or current storefront terms. Check the relevant store before buying; owning the PS4 original and transferring its save are separate matters from having access to the PS5 edition. See the PlayStation announcement and Kojima Productions’ PC release notice.

Is Director’s Cut worth it if you played the original?

If you want more missions, challenges, equipment and delivery options, Director’s Cut is the more content-rich edition described by the official materials. It is a more substantial upgrade on PS5 if you also value its controller, audio and display features. If you already own the PS4 or PC original, compare the current upgrade offer and save-transfer instructions for your platform before paying; the cited launch announcements do not provide current upgrade pricing. For a first playthrough, the added content is integrated into the campaign, and the developer recommended starting at the beginning.

Release dates

The PS5 edition launched on 24 September 2021. The PC Director’s Cut launched on 30 March 2022, according to Kojima Productions’ PC release announcement.
