On an iPhone or iPad, you can usually start setup by opening the AirPods case nearby; AirPods Max use a different step. If AirPods stop connecting, check charge, Bluetooth, and audio output first, then re-pair and reset only if needed.
Pair AirPods with an iPhone or iPad
- Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS or iPadOS, then open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- For AirPods or AirPods Pro, place both earbuds in the case, open its lid, and hold it near the device. When the setup animation appears, follow the on-screen steps.
- For AirPods Max, remove them from the Smart Case and hold them near the iPhone or iPad within 60 seconds, then follow the setup prompts.
An internet connection may be needed to access Find My features during pairing. If no setup animation appears, use the manual pairing steps below.
Pair AirPods manually
Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control for your model. The status light should flash white. Then open the device’s Bluetooth settings and select AirPods from the available devices.
Find the pairing control for your model
- AirPods 4 and 5, and AirPods Pro 3: Open the case with the earbuds inside and double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Other in-ear AirPods models: Open the case with the earbuds inside and press and hold the setup button on the back until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Max: Press and hold the listening mode button until the status light flashes white.
Case designs and controls differ by model. If these steps do not match your AirPods, check the instructions for your exact model in Apple’s AirPods pairing guide.

Fix AirPods that will not connect
Work through these checks in order. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the device and charge state before re-pairing; reset is a later step if re-pairing does not solve the problem.
- Update the device. Install the latest operating system update for your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Check charging. Put both AirPods in the charging case and confirm that both are charging.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on. Check Bluetooth in the device’s settings.
- Select AirPods as the audio output. Put them in your ears, open Control Centre on iPhone or iPad, and select AirPods if they appear as an output. Test playback and check the device volume.
- Restart the case connection. Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then reopen it.
- Pair again. On a Mac, use the manual pairing procedure. On iPhone or iPad, use the pairing-mode control for your exact model and follow the on-screen steps.
- Reset only if re-pairing fails. Follow Apple’s model-specific reset instructions; reset steps are not the same for every AirPods model. Apple’s AirPods connection troubleshooting guide links to the relevant reset guidance.
Why AirPods pairing steps differ
The setup depends on both the target device and the AirPods model. iPhone and iPad can show a nearby setup animation, while Mac and non-Apple devices use Bluetooth settings. AirPods Max use their listening mode button; in-ear models use a case control, which is on the front for AirPods 4 and 5 and AirPods Pro 3, and on the back for other in-ear models.
