Choose Kindle’s built-in reader for the simplest Amazon-linked experience; choose KOReader when you need broader file support and more control over document layout. For PDFs, KOReader offers zoom and reflow tools, while Kindle’s built-in reader avoids a separate installation and can receive documents through Send to Kindle. The deciding caveat: running KOReader on a Kindle requires a compatible jailbreak, and it cannot open DRM-protected books or KFX.

Which reader is better for your ebooks?
Choose Kindle’s built-in reader for Amazon-linked convenience
Amazon’s reader connects reading across devices and apps through an account-linked experience. Its listed features include text and layout adjustments, notes, highlights, in-book search, and dictionary lookup. Personal documents can be delivered to the Kindle library and downloaded to linked devices when the library option is enabled. See Amazon’s Kindle reader feature overview and Send to Kindle support.
Consider KOReader for format breadth and customization
KOReader is a document viewer designed primarily for e-ink devices, and the project lists support for Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, reMarkable, Android, and Linux computers. Its README lists PDF, DjVu, CBT, and CBZ alongside reflowable formats such as EPUB, FB2, MOBI, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM, and TXT. It also offers detailed typography and layout controls, plus calibre integration for metadata search, wireless delivery, and OPDS library browsing. The exact capabilities can depend on the device and file; consult the KOReader project README.
PDFs: the better choice depends on the document
For scanned PDFs and page fitting, KOReader has more documented tools
KOReader documents zoom-to-fit for paged media and a reflow option for scanned PDF and DjVu files using its built-in K2pdfopt library. Reflow can make text easier to read on a small screen, but it changes how a fixed-page document is presented; it is not the same as viewing the original page layout.

For straightforward delivery, Send to Kindle is simpler
Amazon lists PDF among Send to Kindle’s supported types and offers delivery through web upload, email, mobile and desktop apps, and a browser extension. Amazon UK says the service has no additional cost and that web uploads may be up to 200 MB, according to its current support documentation accessed October 7, 2026. These are service details, not a guarantee that each PDF will look or behave the same across Kindle models and apps. Check Amazon’s Send to Kindle help.
Account for device-specific annotation features
Amazon’s personal-document feature table distinguishes among Kindle Scribe, other Kindle e-readers, and apps. Amazon documents writing directly on the page for Kindle Scribe in supported document workflows; do not assume that capability is available on every Kindle. Amazon’s personal-document notes table and Kindle Scribe FAQ describe the device-specific differences.

A fixed-layout PDF may remain awkward to read on a small screen, regardless of reader. If PDFs are central to your choice, compare how your own documents display on your device rather than assuming a universal winner.
KOReader on Kindle: check compatibility before choosing it
KOReader can be installed on jailbroken Kindle devices, but the project’s guide says eligibility depends on the precise model, model variant, and current firmware. The guide was edited August 28, 2026, and describes multiple installation paths with firmware-specific instructions; it labels one package-manager route experimental. Verify your exact device and firmware against the current KOReader Kindle installation guide before making changes.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important format limits for Kindle users
KOReader’s Kindle installation guide says EPUB is its best-supported format; other formats such as MOBI may lack some features. KFX and DRM-protected books are not supported. In practical terms, a Kindle Store purchase will not become KOReader-compatible simply because the title’s general file format appears on KOReader’s supported list. Check the KOReader format guidance before relying on it for a particular book.

Make the choice by your actual reading workflow
- Pick Kindle’s built-in reader if you prioritize an Amazon-linked library, Send to Kindle document delivery, and familiar tools such as notes, highlights, search, and dictionary lookup.
- Consider KOReader on a supported non-Kindle device if your library includes varied document formats, you want more control over typesetting, or you use calibre or OPDS.
- Consider KOReader on a Kindle only after checking jailbreak eligibility and confirming that the formats you need are not DRM-protected or KFX.
- For PDFs, decide by document type and device: KOReader documents zoom and scanned-document reflow; Kindle offers convenient document delivery and device-dependent writing features.
